No. 7 West Virginia’s Early Goal Holds Up in 1-0 Win over Men’s Soccer

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Sergio Ors Navarro scored his ninth goal of the season just 64 seconds into the match, and that was all No. 7 West Virginia needed in a 1-0 win over a determined Bucknell side on Tuesday night at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium.
The Bison, who jumped into the United Soccer Coaches Atlantic Region rankings at No. 9 earlier in the day, fell to 4-4-1 on the season. The Mountaineers, who made it all the way to the national semifinals last season, remained unbeaten at 6-0-3.
Bucknell came in as the top-ranked defensive team in the Patriot League allowing only 1.0 goals per game, and despite playing without two veteran center backs in this one they overcame some early nervy moments and held the high-powered Mountaineers to just the one goal.
Senior Aidan Lawlor sat out with an injury, and junior Jackson Sullivan was not available due to a red card at the end of Saturday's win at American. Freshman Collin Sullivan, Jackson's younger brother, filled in admirably, playing all 90 minutes alongside Ben Sheffield and Jack Roberto. Bucknell also received quality minutes from freshmen backs Charlie Sorensen, Noah Handzel, and Matt McLeod off the bench.
The match was barely a minute old when Marcus Caldeira, a first-round pick by Minnesota United FC in last year's MLS SuperDraft, played a long ball through to Ors Navarro streaking down the right flank. Ors Navarro's attempt was smothered by charging goalkeeper Freddie Lapworth but the ball caromed off a Bison defender sliding in from behind, and the WVU striker tapped it over the line for his ninth goal in nine matches, one off the national lead.
Ors Navarro nearly had a 10th moments later when he slotted a shot past Lapworth, but Sheffield swept the ball off the goal line. Frederick Jorgensen then put a second attempt off the crossbar. In the sixth minute, a low cross came all the way through to Caldeira in front of goal, but his attempt sailed over the bar.
Bucknell settled in from there and had several good spells of possession in the final half-hour of the first half. Jack Lucas flashed a shot wide of the goal, and then six minutes later Winston Oziri brought the ball to his left foot a rocketed shot squarely off the right post. Inside eight minutes to play in the half, substitute Mason Lillis turned two defenders around in the area and just missed wide.
Sam Nyenka missed on a semi breakaway in the final minute of the half, and then WVU outshot the Bison 8-2 in the second half but couldn't find an insurance goal. The Bison had the ball in the Mountaineers end as the final seconds ticked away but could not get a shot.
Freddie Lapworth tallied six saves in goal as West Virginia finished with a 17-7 shot advantage.
Bucknell returns to Patriot League play on Saturday night against Lehigh. The Bison have sole possession of first place with seven points (2-0-1), while the Mountain Hawks are just one behind.
