LEWISBURG, Pa. - Ashley O'Connor equaled her career high with 12 points on four 3-point field goals, including three that keyed a 20-2 run to start the third quarter, and four Bison starters scored in double figures as the Bucknell women's basketball team defeated Lafayette 65-58 Saturday afternoon at Sojka Pavilion to notch back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
Ashley Sofilkanich led the Bison with 13 points, while Grace Sullivan added 12 and Emma Theodorsson registered 10. Bucknell (5-12, 2-4 PL) recorded a season-high 19 assists, including five apiece by Theodorsson and O'Connor.
The Bison trailed 32-25 at halftime before exploding for 26 points in the third quarter. O'Connor's 3-pointer with 6:06 left staked Bucknell to a 37-34 advantage and the Bison held the lead the rest of the way. Bucknell was 11-for-16 from the field in the third quarter, including 4-for-6 from behind the arc.
Lafayette (6-11, 1-5 PL) posted a 17-0 run in the first half to build its halftime lead. The Leopards were led by Abby Antognoli and Halee Smith with 17 points apiece. Kay Donahue added 10 points off the bench.
"I'm thrilled with the win," said head coach Trevor Woodruff. "That was a quality opponent who played every team tough. I'm happy with the win. It was a good finish to a good win and hopefully, it is more to build on as we travel throughout the year."
Bucknell started hot building leads of 9-5 and 14-7. Lafayette continued to claw and scratch its back into the contest and never left the Bison to run away with the first quarter. Bucknell had the clear upper hand but could not deal a decisive blow. The quarter concluded with Lafayette on a 4-0 run to cut the Orange & Blue's advantage to 20-17.Â
The transition between quarters did not blunt the Leopards' momentum. Lafayette continued to stack points and ran its streak to 17-0, thus obtaining a 30-20 lead before Sullivan ended the stretch with a hook shot. The Bison added three points on a Theodorsson two-pointer and a free throw. Lafayette ended the half making a pull-up jump shot for the 32-25 advantage.
Bucknell stormed out of halftime and immediately used a 5-0 run via Matthews two and a Theodorsson three to tie the contest. Lafayette retook the lead with a two-pointer, but Bucknell rattled off a 11-0 run to seize the lead. It was a situation that did not change. O'Connor led the charge, going 3-of-3 in the third quarter from three-point land. Lafayette broke the run with several baskets but the Bison carried a comfortable 51-40 lead into the final quarter.Â
The Bison kept the pressure on the Leopards and the score did not dip into single-digits until the final minutes. Bucknell's biggest lead of 15 points (61-46) came via a Sullivan layup. The Bison owned the paint, scoring 34 points in its confines. Lafayette scored two baskets, including a tally with one second remaining to finalize the score at 65-58.Â
