ANNAPOLIS, Md.- Despite Ashley Sofilkanich's 21 points, the Bucknell Bison women's basketball team (5-13, 2-5 Patriot League) fell 59-48 to the Navy Midshipmen (6-12, 2-5 Patriot League) Wednesday night. The defeat snapped Bucknell's two-game winning streak and left the Orange & Blue still searching for its first road triumph.
The Bison never led in the game and the contest was tied only once, 32-32 in the third quarter.
Ashley Sofilkanich was a powerful presence in the paint, collecting 21 points on 8-of-19 shooting from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Isabella King posted a nice stat line, going 4-of-7 from the field for 11 points. But the Bison struggled overall, shooting 16-of-57 (28.1%) and 4-of-31 (12.9%) when King and Sofilkanich were not taking the shot.
Navy was slightly more efficient, recording a 21-of-57 (36.1%) effort. The Midshipmen had three scorers, Zanai Barnett-Gay, Kate Samson, and Kyah Smith recorded 16 points.
The Midshipmen had 45 rebounds to Bucknell's 32. Turnovers were even at 15.
Navy opened the contest on an 8-2 run. Sofilkanich's lay-up served as the only Bison response. The Mids grew its lead to 12-3, as the Bison shooters stayed frigid. Sofilkanich added a free throw. The quarter ended 12-4 after Blake Matthews added a free throw. Bucknell finished the period shooting 1-of-16.
The Bison efforts picked up in the second quarter. Sofilkanich went to work, scoring five points. Unfortunately for the Orange & Blue, Navy also obtained five points. The Mids tallied another basket, and Sofilkanich ran her streak to seven straight points. King scored once to break Sofilkanich's run, but the freshman forward scored four more points. Navy added another basket to take a football score of 21-17 into halftime.
The momentum obtained before halftime was immediately derailed by Navy's Sydne Watts tallying a three-pointer 11 seconds into the third quarter. Grace Sullivan scored five quick points to keep Bucknell within striking distance. With the score at 32-25, Bucknell made its run. Sofilkanich hit a jumper, King scored a trey off a fast break, and Emma Theodorsson scored two free throws to tie the game. The tie was short-lived. Navy scored 12 seconds later and went on a 9-3 run to end the quarter. Bucknell never tied the game again.
Navy kept the stretch going to start the final quarter. The Mids ran their lead to 50-37 with 5:54 remaining. The Bison made one last grasp. With the score 52-40 Navy, the Orange & Blue created two traditional three-point plays by King and Theodorsson to draw within six points. But no comeback would happen. Navy sealed the game with a 5-0 run. Theodorsson added one more basket, and the Mids hit two more free throws to win 59-48.
