Field Hockey Drops 2-1 Game to Ohio State

COLUMBUS, OHIO - The Bucknell Bison field hockey team dropped a narrow 2-1 decision to the Big Ten Ohio State Buckeyes. The Bison scored a late goal in the fourth period, but time ran out on the Orange & Blue.Â
Ohio State outshot Bucknell 14-9 and drew 11 corners to the Bison's four.Â
Recap
Bucknell had two penalty corners in the first four minutes, but the Buckeyes prevented any scoring. Ohio State had an astounding seven penalty corners in the first quarter, but the Bison defense held strong. However, the Buckeyes, with 11 seconds left, maneuvered around a defender and goalkeeper Sarah Althouse to deposit the sphere in the open net to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead.Â
The second quarter featured virtually no dramatic moments as both defenses prevented incursions into their territories. Ohio State drew one penalty corner that amounted to nothing. Lily Neilson smacked a shot that nearly tied the game but instead, it bounced off the post.Â
The third period immediately heated up, with both teams recording penalty corners and shots in the first few minutes. Ohio State added an insurance goal after a Buckeye tapped the ball past Althouse. The Ohioian team threatened to add another goal, but Althouse smothered the shot. A Neilson shot attempt was saved by the Buckeye goalie.Â
The Bison tallied their goal in the 54th minute. Kari Melberger collected a Kira Leclercq shot that hit the post and passed the ball to Isabella Pavlides, who was stationed by the far post. The forward tapped in the pass to cut the deficit to 2-1. But the comeback ended there. No shots by either team occurred in the final minutes, even as three yellow cards were issued. The clock ran out on Bucknell to seal the win for Ohio State.Â
