WEST POINT, N.Y. – Henna Andican scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season midway through the first half, but Army West Point countered with three second-half scores and defeated Bucknell 3-1 at rain-soaked Clinton Field on Saturday night.
The Bison saw their six-match unbeaten streak (4-0-2) come to an end, as well as their 12-match unbeaten streak (6-0-6) against Patriot League opponents. Bucknell's last loss to a conference foe came at Navy in the first round of league play 53 weeks ago.
Now 6-3-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the Patriot League, Bucknell turned in a spirited first half on the road in a rematch of the 2022 tournament final. The Bison attempted 11 shots in the opening 45 minutes and had close calls from Andican and Teresa Deda before Andican found the back of the net in the 25th minute.
Katie Schiano played a long, high ball into the penalty area, where Andican got good position on her defender and finished with a strong header.
With rain teeming down as the second half started, Army quickly equalized just 1:37 into the period. Cami Silvestro one-timed a shot that was saved by Jenna Hall, but Brigid Duffy was there to knock in the rebound.
Army took its first lead of the night in the 59th minute. After a Bison defender tried to clear the ball up the middle of the park but it went right to Duffy, who played in Madison Niebish for a 1v1 finish past the keeper.
Bucknell's comeback hopes took a big hit in the 73rd minute, when Deda was assessed a second yellow card and was sent off. The Bison tried to press forward with 10 players, but the Black Knights countered with a third goal in the 85th minute on a sliding finish by Jasmine Talley.
Hall finished with six saves for the Bison, who were outshot 19-14.
Bucknell will now have a week off before heading back on the road to face Holy Cross next Saturday at 1 p.m.
