RESULTS
BOARDMAN, Ohio – Bucknell freshman Sofia Nogalo made six birdies on the way to a 2-under-par 70 and the first-round lead on Saturday at the Roseann Schwartz Invitational, hosted by Youngstown State at Mill Creek Golf Course. The Bison are in third place in the team standings after posting a 306 total, just three shots behind co-leaders Indiana State and Cleveland State heading into Sunday's final round.
The Bison also counted a 76 from freshman Nicole Yun, a 77 from senior Cristina Canales, and an 83 from freshman Katherine Vice.
Nogalo was the story of the day for the Bison. She carded the sixth round of 2-under or better in team history and was just one off the school record for low round in relation to par. Bridget Wilcox fired a 3-under 69 at the Nittany Lion Invitational in 2010.
Nogalo, who finished T-3rd at the Bucknell Invitational in her first collegiate tournament earlier in the month, fired a 2-under 34 on the front nine. After a double-bogey at the par-4 fifth hole, she birdied three of the next four. Nogalo made her fifth birdie at the par-5 15th to get to 3-under on the day, and after two bogeys she ended the round with birdie No. 6.
Nogalo has a two-shot lead on the individual leaderboard. Kaitlin Kormuth of Cleveland State is two back after posting an even-par 70. Four others are tied for third at 1-over. Yun (T-11th) and Canales (T-15th) also reside in the top-15 in a field of 60 players.
The second and final round is slated for Sunday morning with 9:30 a.m. tee times.
