Field Hockey Caps Weekend with Double Overtime Win
9/23/2023 4:14:00 PM | Field Hockey
Recap
Nearly seven minutes passed before either team recorded a shot. A Bucknell penalty corner and shot went for naught. Fuhs substituted in and, one minute later, scored the first goal of the game and the first of her career. Hope Davis shot outside the circle, and the ball deflected off the goalie. Fuhs was there to tap the sphere in and give Bucknell a 1-0 lead. Holy Cross had two shot attempts that came up empty.Â

The second period came and went without much fanfare. The Bison could only produce two unsuccessful shot attempts. Holy Cross had two penalty corner chances before halftime, but the purple-clad players could not get a shot off.Â
The entire third period belonged to the Bison. The Crusaders did not attempt a single shot as the Bucknell defense shut down their offense. Bucknell generated plenty of attempts, but the second goal continued to elude the Lewisburg team. Fuhs came through for her second goal of the game as the third shot attempt after a Bucknell penalty corner. The Bison entered the final period up 2-0.

The fourth quarter was for Holy Cross, as the third period was for Bucknell. The Crusaders clamped down on the Bison offense, not allowing a single shot or penalty corner. With five minutes left, Holy Cross scored on a rebound shot off a penalty corner. The Bison defense was holding on to the slim lead and, with under a minute left to go, appeared to be ready to win until a Bucknell turnover set up Holy Cross. A Crusader took a shot from outside the circle. The sphere deflected off a defender and sneaked past goalkeeper Sarah Althouse to tie the game and send the contest into overtime.Â
Bucknell dominated the first overtime period, recording six shots to Holy Cross' one. However, the Bison could not deliver on their numerous opportunities as the winning goal seemed just out of reach. Holy Cross came scarily close to winning the game on their shot attempt, but the Crusader stationed next to the cage missed the prime chance to redirect the errant shot into goal.Â
The Bison won in the second overtime period off a slick set-piece play. Bucknell received a penalty corner opportunity and had Hannah Guarente insert the ball to Mia Fields, who passed the sphere to Lily Neilson. Neilson fired a missile that bounced off the goalie and spun into the right corner of the cage to give Bucknell the 3-2 win and the Bison's first Patriot League victory of 2023.Â
