Field Hockey Wins 3-0 Over Wagner
9/22/2023 7:05:00 PM | Field Hockey
LEWISBURG, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison field hockey team (4-5, 0-1 PL) defeated the visiting Wagner Seahawks (0-6, 0-0 NEC) 3-0 on Friday afternoon in nonconference action. The Bison used a balanced attack to dominate as three Bucknell players tallied a goal. The Orange & Blue outshot the Staten Island team 15-9 and drew five penalty corners to Wagner's four.Â
Recap
Bucknell set the tone early with Gianna Puorro recording a shot attempt merely one minute and 13 seconds into the contest. The chance was unsuccessful, but the Bison made their offensive presence felt. Wagner provided two shot attempts at the seventh-minute mark, but goalkeeper Sarah Althouse saved one, and the other shot went wide. Lily Neilson had two shots in the final minutes, but neither opportunity found the cage.Â
Kira Leclercq had two shots 39 seconds into the period, but both chances were denied. Bucknell scored nine minutes later when Puorro fed a beautiful pass to Neilson. The Australian forward, stationed at the top of the circle, received the ball, pivoted to her left, reversed, and slammed home a scorching shot past the Wagner goalkeeper for her sixth tally of the year and Bucknell's first goal of the game. Wagner had a penalty corner 27 seconds before the half, but the chance was wasted.
Â
Wagner dominated the early portion of the third quarter, taking three shots to Bucknell's none. However, the Bison defense prevented any scoring. In the 42nd minute, Bucknell scored its second goal. A penalty corner set up a Puorro insertion to Mia Fields, who sent a screaming shot into the back of the cage. The teams then traded shot attempts, but the moment passed without further scoring.Â
Â
Early in the fourth period, Wagner had back-to-back penalty corner attempts to no avail. Bucknell scored in the 52nd minute when Zoe Carlson-Pietraszek zoomed ahead on a fast break. She received the pass, had to maneuver around a diving goalkeeper, recollected the sphere, and shot into the empty net for the third goal of her 2023 season and Bucknell's third score of the game. The insurance goal has been purchased. Two more Bucknell shots came tantalizingly close, but the game ended 3-0.Â
