Andican’s Goal Sends Women’s Soccer to 1-0 Win over American

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Henna Andican's 26th-minute goal was all the Bucknell women's soccer team needed in a 1-0 Patriot League victory over American on Wednesday night at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. The Bison improved to 6-2-2 overall and 1-0-1 in league play, while the Eagles dropped their first conference match after knocking off Army at home on Saturday.
Bucknell threatened early in the match, with Reese Evans and Andican both ripping shots that were tipped into the crossbar by AU goalkeeper Julia Kato. Less than two minutes after Andican's close call, the Bison earned a corner kick, and this time the sophomore striker dented the back of the net.
Teresa Deda's service was grazed by a defender to Andican in the center of the area. Andican bodied the ball down and then got all of a rising left-footed strike for her fourth goal of the season.
Later in the half, Deda just missed after dispossessing an Eagles midfielder, and four minutes after that, Kalli Wethern forced a diving save from Kato.
High-quality chances were harder to come by in the second half. Evans got in behind the back line in the 58th minute but Kato was positioned well for the save.
The Bison defense kept keeper Jenna Hall clean for the most part, with all four of her saves coming on shots from long range. The Eagles did earn a corner kick as the 90th minute approached, but Hall went up high to corral the delivery.
Hall joined Jessica Ratner as the only goalkeepers in program history with 20 career shutouts. Hall is now just two behind Ratner for the career record.
Bucknell finished with an 18-10 shot advantage, including a 7-4 edge in shots on target. Andican led the way with five shots, followed by Evans with four.
The Bison extended their home unbeaten streak to 11 (6-0-5) and their head-to-head unbeaten streak against American to 10 (9-0-1).
Up next is a trip to West Point on Saturday for a 6 p.m. match at Clinton Field. It will be a rematch of the 2022 Patriot League Tournament final, which finished scoreless before the Bison prevailed in penalty kicks.
