Men’s Soccer Drops Non-League Road Match at Seton Hall

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Waldemar Kattrup scored his first goal in a Bucknell uniform to cut into a 2-0 halftime deficit, but Seton Hall answered with two insurance goals and defeated the Bison 4-1 on Tuesday night at Owen T. Carroll Field.

The Pirates, who were ranked 23rd nationally two weeks ago, improved to 4-2-1 on the season, with their only losses coming to ranked sides Indiana and Georgetown. Bucknell fell to 1-5-1 heading into another tough road test at defending Patriot League champion Navy.

The Bison were strong defensively in the first half, but despite not allowing a shot on goal in the run of play until the final 10 seconds found themselves down 2-0 at the interval.

Neither side had attempted a shot into the 28th minute, when Seton Hall caught a break. Hugo Gerbore was surrounded by four blue shirts at the edge of the area, and when he tried to split two of them he went to ground and a penalty was awarded. Andrea Borg converted from the penalty spot to give the Pirates the lead.

In the waning moments of the half, Ryan Burritt got an important deflection on a shot from the center of the area. On the ensuing corner kick, the ball was headed toward goal, and then Axel Berglund cleaned up the loose ball from close range with just six seconds remaining.

Bucknell faced the daunting task of coming from behind against a team that entered the night ranked sixth nationally in team goals-against average (0.50), but some nice build-up play led to the Kattrup goal just 4:45 into the second half.

Cade McGrath played a ball out wide for Jack Roberto, who laid it off for an overlapping Charlie Holmes. Holmes burst by his man on the end line and centered a pass to Kattrup, who took a touch and then finished with his left foot for his first career goal.

The Pirates answered 14 minutes later on a nice running volley by Tim Strobeck, a Clemson transfer who scored three goals for the Tigers during their 2021 national championship season. Jared Smith added a fourth for Seton Hall in the 80th minute with a header off the crossbar and down over the line.

The Bison had been 2-0 all-time against Seton Hall with the wins coming in 2013 and 2015. The Pirates finished with a 12-4 shot advantage in this one. Freddie Lapworth made two saves for the Bison before giving way to Jake Nicoll in the 78th minute. Matias Molina stopped one shot for Seton Hall.

Bucknell and Navy get together on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility in Annapolis.
