UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison field hockey team (3-5, 0-1 PL) dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to the #12 Penn State Nittany Lions (5-3, 0-1 BIG 10) on Sunday afternoon. Bucknell opened the scoring in the Route 45 Rivalry with a Lily Neilson goal but the Nittany Lions tallied twice in the third period to win the game.
Recap
The Bison defense dominated the first period. Bucknell held Penn State to zero shots while shooting three of their own. Isabella Pavlides had a shot opportunity near the five-minute mark, and Neilson had two chances later in the quarter that went wide.
If the first period was sluggish, the second quarter resembled a firecracker, with both teams going up and down the field. Penn State had several penalty corners and numerous shots, but goalkeeper Sarah Althouse turned them away. A few minutes later, Bucknell received a penalty corner. Kira Leclercq sent an attempt into the danger zone. It was blocked, but Neilson was there to redirect the missile into the net and give Bucknell the 1-0 lead. Penn State battled back with three penalty corners and multiple shooting attempts, but Althouse kept the ranked foe scoreless as the game entered halftime.
If Bucknell owned the first period, then Penn State received the deed to the third quarter. The Bison were held shotless while Penn State scored two goals to take the lead. The first goal arrived via a penalty stroke after Leclercq received a green card. Althouse tried her best, but the Nittany Lion shooter slipped the ball past her. Five minutes later, Penn State scored their second goal. The Nittany Lions had two more penalty corners, but the Bison prevented further scoring.
The Bison outshot Penn State 4-1 in the final period but could not break through the defenses. Neilson and Puorro each had a shot attempt. With seven minutes left, Bucknell received two penalty corners. Neilson took both shots, but the sphere could not find the cage. The final minutes ticked off with only PSU substitutions to mark the moments.
Up Next
The Bison return to Graham Field to play NEC foe Wagner on Friday and PL opponent Holy Cross on Saturday.
