Women’s Soccer Finishes in Scoreless Draw at Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Bucknell women's soccer team fended off some late Colgate pressure and finished in a 0-0 draw in the Patriot League openers for both sides on Saturday afternoon at Beyer-Small '76 Field.
Including last year's two shootout wins in the Patriot League Tournament, this was Bucknell's fifth straight official draw against a league foe, and the Bison have now shut out seven of their last eight conference opponents dating back to last October.
Bucknell (5-2-2) and Colgate (1-6-2) both had opportunities but could not find a finishing touch. The Raiders finished with a 12-11 shot advantage and needed six saves from goalkeeper Alli Popham. Jenna Hall made four saves for the Bison on the way to her 19th career shutout, second-most in team history.
Bucknell's best scoring chance in the first half came with just over five minutes remaining, when Kalli Wethern ran onto Teresa Deda's ball deep in the box, but Popham was there to smother the one-time shot.
The Bison had another close call an hour into the match, when Paige Temple stole a pass and then clipped a shot just barely over the crossbar. About 12 minutes later, Deda waltzed through the defense and got plenty on a shot from the 18, but Popham was there for the save.
The Raiders controlled play for most of the final 17 minutes, forcing the Bison to deal with a number of dangerous balls in their area. A threatening free kick in the 73rd minute had to be put out for a corner kick, and four minutes later Paige Foa tried to jam in a loose ball at the near post, but Hall and a defender were both there to keep it out.
Sophie Wand put a 22-yard free kick over the bar in the 80th minute, and then with just three minutes to play the Bison headed away a corner kick but right back to the taker on the side of the area, and Sara Anelli's header off the resulting cross sailed over.
Colgate historically has been a tough road trip for the Bison, who came into the match 3-16-1 all-time in Hamilton, so they will take a point against a Raiders squad that was eager to shake a six-match losing streak, albeit against a very formidable non-conference schedule.
Next up for Bucknell is a home date with American on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Eagles knocked off Army 2-1 on Saturday and will come to Lewisburg with a 1-4-3 overall record.
