Late Goal by Reese Evans Gives Women’s Soccer 2-1 Win over Air Force

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Reese Evans provided the final touch on a wild sequence in the 84th minute, lifting the Bucknell women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Air Force on Sunday afternoon at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. Now 5-2-1 on the season, the Bison won their third straight match heading into the start of Patriot League play, and they extended their home unbeaten streak to 10 (5-0-5) dating back to last season.
Hannah Stuck also scored for the Bucknell in an entertaining affair that saw a combined 36 shots attempted and both goalkeepers save penalty kicks.
After beating Colorado College 5-2 on Thursday, the Bison made it a Rocky Mountain sweep on the homestand. Bucknell scored four second-half goals to come from behind to beat the Tigers, and then the Bison wasted little time getting on the board in this one.
Not even 90 seconds into the match, Evans passed back to Meghan White, whose long delivery into the box was headed in by Stuck. The Bison nearly put two more on the sheet over the next 10 minutes. Henna Andican was sent in behind by Teresa Deda but pulled her shot just inches wide of the left post. Then Stuck was robbed of her brace by a diving save from Cammi Bych.
The Falcon netminder made three more saves in the first half to keep it 1-0, and then the game really opened up in the second half. Goalkeeper Jenna Hall and Bucknell's back line held strong against an Air Force side that had scored nine goals in its previous four games, but the Falcons caught a break in the 64th minute when a penalty was awarded after a slide tackle in the box.
Hall was up to the task, diving to her right to save Mia Otero's spot kick and then pouncing on the loose ball just before Otero arrived for a follow-up attempt.
Stuck just missed the left post not long after the Hall save, and then Air Force (3-3) did manage to find its equalizer in the 77th minute. The Bison cleared out a corner kick, but Hailey Ramos slotted a shot back through the sea of bodies and into the left side netting.
Bucknell has responded well to conceding goals throughout the early part of this season, and the Bison did it again with a goal with just over six minutes remaining. This time it was Bucknell earning a penalty after heavy pressure in the box led to a hand ball.
White, who scored the go-ahead goal on a PK last time out against Colorado College, this time had her attempt saved by Bych. Paige Temple was first to the loose ball, and Bych made a second point-blank save, with the ball ricocheting to the center of the area. Evans didn't miss on the third crack at it, one-timing a shot inside the right post for her third goal of the season.
"This was not our best performance, but once again our group deserves a lot of credit for showing some grit and resiliency in finding a way to win," said head coach Kelly Cook. "Jenna Hall was awesome today, and I'm excited about the 2-0 weekend to take some positive momentum into the start of Patriot League play."
Bucknell finished with a 19-17 shot advantage, while Air Force led 6-5 in corner kicks. Hall tallied five saves and Bych seven as both keepers had strong games.
Bucknell will start Patriot League play on the road next Saturday at Colgate. Start time is 3 p.m., from Hamilton, N.Y.
