Women's Tennis Off to Strong Start at Season-Opening Bucknell Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Eight Bucknell women's tennis players opened the 2023-24 season 1-0 with victories in the opening singles round of the Bucknell Invitational on Friday. Five won their matches in straight sets, while three others gutted out tiebreak wins in the round-robin style home tournament with Lafayette, Mount St. Mary's and Saint Francis.
Senior Tyne Miller and junior Caroline Marcus both won playing in the 1 p.m. time slot. Miller bounced back from a 6-1 loss in the opening set to defeat Mount St. Mary's Adriana Barney 6-4 in the second and 10-6 in the tiebreaker. Marcus defeated Lafayette's Ally Bauer 6-2, 6-3.
Senior Madi Sebulsky, junior Anna Lajos and sophomore Mirra Manolov each pulled out two-set victories as well. Manolov handled Saint Francis' Gretta Rhodes with a dominant 6-0, 6-2 win.
Sophomore Abby Platt joined Miller with a comeback win, defeating Saint Francis' Kelly Douona 5-7, 6-3, 10-7.
Both of Bucknell's rookies shined in their collegiate debuts. Tori Allen knocked off Saint Francis senior Marie Discini with a 6-2, 6-4 win, and Jaycie Mair gave up just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win over the Red Flash's Jessie Thepsouvan.
Play resumes at the Bucknell Invitational on Saturday with two rounds of doubles play and another round of singles. Bucknell's doubles pairings are as follows: King/Platt, Miller/Allen, Marcus/Lajos, Sebulsky/Manolov, Novak/Mair.
The first round of doubles is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
