LEWISBURG, Pa. – Led by a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash by Amar Tahirovic in the top singles flight, the Bucknell men's tennis team turned in a dominant opening day at the Bucknell Invitational on Friday. All eight Bison won singles matches in straight sets by a combined game score of 96-26.
Each player will see three singles and three doubles matches over the course of the three-day event. Singles play started Friday afternoon in each of the eight four-team groups, and all eight Bison are off to 1-0 starts, with seven of the wins coming against players from Patriot League rival Lafayette.
Tahirovic, a First Team All-Patriot League honoree as a freshman last season, did not yield a game to Arman Ganchi in the Blue Group. Fellow sophomores Adam Stavrakas (6-0, 6-1), Brendan McDonald (6-3, 6-2), and Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega (6-1, 6-2) all followed with wins, as did the team's lone senior Tim Zelikovsky, who was a 6-1, 6-4 victor over Davis Esslinger.
Bucknell's three freshmen rounded out the lineup, and all three posted wins in their collegiate debuts. Liam Kilmer topped Ryan Burns 6-2, 6-3; Ethan Esclamado defeated William Woolley 6-1, 6-3; and Will Robinson downed Mount St. Mary's Marcel Cronin 6-1, 6-2.
Play continues on Saturday starting at 9 a.m., with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles. In doubles, the Bison will pair up Tahirovic and Bain, Stavrakas and McDonald, Zelikovsky and Kilmer, and Robinson and Esclamado.
