LEWISBURG, Pa. – After sweeping eight singles matches on Friday, the Bison men's tennis team followed it up with another strong day at the Bucknell Invitational. Saturday's action saw two rounds of doubles and one more round of singles, and the Bucknell squad combined to go 7-1 in doubles and 6-2 in singles on the day.
The doubles tandems of Amar Tahirovic/Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega, Adam Stavrakas/Brendan McDonald, and Tim Zelikovsky/Liam Kilmer all went 2-0, while the all-freshman pairing of Ethan Esclamado/Will Robinson split their matches.
Tahirovic and Bain, both sophomores, pulled out a 9-7 tiebreaker to win their opening match against Filippos Zachiotis and Jarrett Karnibad of Mount St. Mary's in the top flight. They had a quicker match against the Lafayette duo of Arman Ganchi and Jake Magnusson, winning 6-2.
Stavrakas/McDonald and Esclamado/Robinson also won close matches against the Mount. The sophomore tandem of Stavrakas and McDonald beat Akarsh Gaonkar and Aaron Thompson, 7-5, and the rookie pairing outlasted Ryan Isgett and Andrew Allen in a tiebreaker.
Bucknell and Mount St. Mary's squared off in eight singles matches on Saturday, with the Bison winning six. Tahirovic, Stavrakas, Bain, Zelikovsky, Kilmer, and Robinson were the Bison winners. All came in straight sets with the exception of Zelikovsky's match against Victor Mignot. The Bison senior held on to win 11-9 in a third-set super tiebreak.
