WEST POINT, N.Y.- The Bucknell Bison softball team (10-22, 2-7 PL) concluded the three-game series against the Army Black Knights (16-23, 7-2 PL) with a gut-wrenching 3-1 defeat. The win gave Army the series victory.
The Bison and Black Knights battled most of the game on even terms. With the score 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Army tallied two runs on a Bucknell error and a sacrifice fly to pull out the victory.
Recap
Savannah Jones started in the circle for the Bison.
Army struck first for a run in the opening inning, but the outcome was prevented from being direr for the Bison. A walk and two singles started the game. The second single plated the Army run. A walk loaded the bases, but Jones induced a swinging strikeout to keep the lead at 1-0 Army.
Bucknell tied the game in the second inning. Noelle Gardon doubled with two outs, and Kailyn Lorberter singled into right field to drive in the third baseman. A fly-out ended the inning, but the contest was deadlocked at 1-1.
The Bison had a chance to seize the lead in the third inning. Haley Speicher singled, and Zoie Smith walked and then stole second. But Jones' grounder stranded runners at second and third.
Madison Roukey entered the circle in the bottom of the third inning, and the sophomore hurler set down nine straight Army batters. The highlight of the streak came in the fifth inning when Speicher spared a dying quail to prevent a single.
Army broke the stalemate in their half of the sixth inning. The leadoff batter reached after being hit by Roukey's errant pitch. A sacrifice bunt advanced the runner to second. A single put runners on the corners. Army attempted the common stratagem of sending the first-base runner on a steal on second. Angelina Seropian, at catcher, did not bite on the attempt. However, Seropian noticed the runner on third was off the bag and attempted a pickoff throw. Alas, her throw darted into left field, and the runner on third scored while the base stealer ended up at third. The following batter hit a sacrifice fly. Kaiya Burton entered the circle and obtained the final out, but Army led 3-1.
The Bison used two pinch hitters, but no hits were forthcoming, and the game and series belonged to Army.
