Men’s Lax Drops Season Finale to Navy, 12-9
4/28/2023 10:19:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Jack Feda scored three times on the crease for Bucknell, but Navy scored four of the game's final five goals to take a 12-9 verdict on Friday night at rain-soaked Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
Cam Doolan scored twice and Connor Davis and Will Hopkins both recorded a goal and an assist for the Bison (3-10, 2-6 PL) in their season finale. Navy (8-7, 5-3 PL) received four goals and two assists from Xavier Arline and 14 saves from goalie Pat Ryan, and the Midshipmen will head into the Patriot League Tournament as the No. 4 seed.
Two straight goals from Doolan and one from Feda gave the Bison an early 3-0 lead after only five minutes of play. Navy pulled within one on a couple of occasions, but Bucknell never relinquished the lead on the way to a 5-4 halftime advantage.
Ryan made three saves in the opening moments of the second half, and three straight goals in a little over three minutes gave the Midshipmen their first lead of the night. Bucknell fought right back, however. Dutch Furlong threaded a nice pass from behind the cage to a cutting Hopkins for a goal, and then a nice save from Jaz Zanelli led to the first career goal for freshman long-pole John Young at the other end, knotting the game at 7-7.
Jack Dudas evened things up again at 8-all with a rocket from the slot with 13:48 left in the fourth quarter, but Navy ended the game on a 4-1 run. Arline broke the tie with an unassisted tally with 12:59 to go. Bucknell won a rare faceoff but quickly turned the ball over, and Navy capitalized with a Henry Tolker goal 30 seconds after the Arline tally.
It remained 10-8 until the 5:40 mark when Feda smothered an outlet pass from the goalie Ryan and stuck it back home to bring the Bison within a goal. Bucknell forced a couple of late turnovers and had a good look at an equalizer with 2:10 to play, but Ryan made a tough save on Dudas.
Mac Haley scored a big insurance goal for Navy with 1:28, and then the Midshipmen won the faceoff and called timeout. The Bison pulled their goalie after the break, and Arline eluded a double team and scored into the empty net with 35 seconds left to make the final 12-9.
Navy won 19 of the 25 faceoffs, as FOGO Anthony Ghobriel finished with 12 ground balls. The Midshipmen finished with a 49-37 shot advantage and a 41-25 edge in ground balls, but they committed 22 turnovers to only 15 for the Bison.
Zanelli finished with 11 saves, and Young tallied three ground balls to go with his first goal. Davis finishes as Bucknell's goal-scoring leader with 25, one more than Feda, who tallied 12 goals in the final three games of the year.
Furlong's assist was his 35th of the year, which is the eighth-highest total in a season in Bucknell history. He now has 60 career assists to rank 10th in Bison annals with another full season to play.
