RESULTS
PHOENIX, Md. – Playing in severe weather conditions on day one of the Patriot League Men's Golf Championship on Friday, Bucknell opened with a 315 team score but sits in fourth place, eight strokes off the lead.
The first-ever Patriot League Championship held at Hillendale Country Club featured temperatures in the low 50s with driving rain and steady 10-20 mph winds with gusts approaching 40 mph. The result was skyrocketing scores, as only 23 of the 48 players in the field broke 80 and none shot better than 75.
Freshman James Key was one of the first players back into the clubhouse, and his 4-over-par 76 puts him in a tie for third place, just one stroke off the lead. Key made one of only three birdies all day at the 18th hole, which played as the toughest of the par-5s.
Blake Wisdom is also in the top 10 (T-9th) with a 78, and Jack Gardner is T-16th with a 79.
Bucknell also counted an 82 from Jackson Bussell in the play-6/count-4 format. Andres Barraza shot 83, and Michael Rudnick posted an 86.
Lehigh fashioned the best team score of the day with a 307, one better than Colgate at 308. Bucknell's playing partner Navy posted a 314 to best the Bison by one, and Holy Cross (318), Lafayette (319), Loyola (319), and Army (319) round out the field.
John Heckel Jr. of Army and Robbie Herzig of Colgate sit atop the individual leaderboard after posting 75s. Bucknell's Key and the Lehigh trio of Aidan Oehrle, Yuxuan Song, and Edmund Broderick are all tied for third after shooting 76.
The 54-hole championship continues Saturday morning with the second of three rounds.
