4/24/2023 2:30:00 PM | Softball
WORCESTER, Mass.- The Bucknell Bison softball team (13-26, 5-10 PL) defeated Holy Cross 3-0 to complete the series sweep. It is the first sweep for the Bison since the 2021 season when the Bison defeated Lafayette in four contests.
Madison Roukey set a career-high with 10 strikeouts as she pitched a complete game shutout to power Bucknell's victory. It is the first time that a Bison pitcher tossed double-digit strikeouts since Raeanne Geffert threw 10 against Mount St. Mary's on Feb. 16, 2020.
Caffrey's Call
"I'm proud of this group for finding a way to show up and compete all three games. It can be hard to focus at this point in the season with the demands of school and the schedule changes that we faced but we were sharp all weekend and I feel that we earned these wins. It feels like we are building on something special and I'm excited to head into the final games with this group. Winning culture takes time to build and it really feels like we're starting to breakthrough."
Recap
Madison Roukey started in the circle for the Bison.
Neither team mustered any threats through the first three innings except for Holy Cross' two-out triple in the bottom of the third inning. Roukey kept calm and induced the final out to keep the Crusaders off the board.
Bucknell used the momentum to tally twice in the top of the fourth inning. Haley Speicher led off with a slashing triple that rolled to the wall. MaKenzie Hilling did her duty and hit a sacrifice fly to score the rookie. Zoie Smith reached on an error and Savannah Jones walked. Chase Knapp drove in Smith with a sharp single into right field. Kailyn Lorberter walked to load the bases with one out. But a knockout blow was avoided as Juliette Basso and Annabella Hawkins were unable to obtain hits.
Roukey allowed a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fourth inning but then struck out the next three batters.
The Bison loaded the bases in the fifth inning. Speicher singled with Smith and Jones drawing walks. Holy Cross made a pitching chance which worked out as the Bison hitters were shut down and the bases were left loaded.
Bucknel added a crucial insurace run in the seventh inning. Noelle Gardon, Speicher, and Hilling all singled to start the frame. Elena Horn was sent into the game to run for Gardon. Smith hit into a fielder's choice which saw Horn forced out at home. Jones delivered a single into center field to score Speicher and give Bucknell a 3-0 lead. The next two batters resulted in outs but the Bison protected themselves from a bloop and a blast situation.
Roukey faced some adversity in the final stanza. After obtaining two quick outs, a single and a walk brought up the top of the Holy Cross order. But a harmless fly out was collected by Speicher and the Bison had their victory and sweep.
