UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison softball team (10-26) dropped a midweek game, 9-0, to the Penn State Nittany Lions (24-13). Penn State used three home runs to separate themselves from the Bison.
Recap
Savannah Jones started in the circle for the Bison.
Penn State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The leadoff batter walked, stole second, and advanced to throw on the errant throw to center field. A fly-out and grounder kept her at third but Chase Knapp bobbled a grounder that scored the runner and extended the inning. Three walks followed which scored an additional run and forced Jones from the game. Kaiya Burton entered in relief and stranded all three runners by inducing a grounder.
Neither team scored in the second inning. Jones led off Bucknell's frame with a single but was not brought home.
Bella Radican singled in the top of the third inning but once again the Bison failed to capitalize.
The Nittany Lions added five runs in the third inning on two home runs. Penn State led off the frame with two straight singles followed by a home run over the center field wall. A third single followed and Madison Roukey was brought in for relief. Roukey obtained two straight outs before yielding a two-run homer. The next batter flew out but PSU was up 7-0.
With two outs in the fourth inning, Chase Knapp singled and Kailyn Lorberter reached on an error. Bucknell seemed poised to score but a Noelle Gardon fly-out ended the opportunity.
Penn State activated the chance for the mercy rule by scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. A double and a home run slotted a 9-0. Hunter Vestal relived Roukey and despite allowing two base runners escaped without letting PSU increase its lead. The Nittany Lions were stymied by a Bison double play. Gardon scooped up a dying quail, fired it to Knapp, who tossed it to Annabella Hawkins at second to end the inning.
The Bison needed two runs in the top of the fifth inning to extend the game but Bucknell was retired in order to end the contest.
Up Next
The Bison travel to Holy Cross this weekend for a pivotal three-game series with the Crusaders.
