LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell baseball team scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth to cut into a 6-0 deficit, but Marist closer Marko Gibbons recorded a strikeout to strand the tying and winning runs on base as the Red Foxes held on to win 6-5 on Wednesday afternoon at cold and windy Depew Field. Grant Voytovich went 3-for-4 and Bucknell received strong performances from lefty relievers Connor Vucovich and Nick Mulvey, but the Bison could not overcome four errors and a host of runners left on base.
Down 6-0 in the ninth, Bucknell took advantage of a bout of wildness from Marist reliever Zane Kmietek. After three straight walks, Jacob Terwilliger was hit by a pitch to plate the first run. Two batters later, Kyle Lyons singled home a run, and then Mason Kelly knocked in two more with a single up the middle. Voytovich was hit by a pitch to re-load the bases, and Jacob Corson followed with a sacrifice fly on the first pitch from Gibbons to make it 6-5. But Marist's big righthander got a three-pitch strikeout to end it.
Bucknell's 2023 home opener was a pitchers' duel early on, as Bison starter Ben Magovern pitched shutout ball into the fifth. But in two of the first three innings, the offense got runners to third with one out but could not score. Voytovich was in the middle of both rallies. In the first, he singled, stole second, and moved to third when the throw skipped into center field. Then in the third, Lyons walked and stole second before Voytovich's pop fly landed safely along the right field line. Lyons had to hold at third, and then Marist reliever Jake Wren came out of the bullpen and recorded a strikeout and a ground out to end the threat.
Marist broke through with three runs on only one hit in the fifth. After a single and two walks loaded the bases, Brian Hart was hit by a pitch, Niko Amory delivered a sacrifice fly, and then a third run scored on an error.
The killer sequence for the Bison came one inning later. Reliever Theo Farynick got two quick outs and then stuck out Colin Mackle on a slider in the dirt, but the throw to first was wild, and that opened the floodgates for Marist to score three runs. After a walk, Marco Ali drove in a run with a single, and two batters later Amory dumped a base hit into left field to plate two more.
Vucovich came out of the bullpen to strand two runners with a strikeout, and then he worked a 1-2-3 seventh with two more Ks. Mulvey followed with two more scoreless frames, facing the minimum six batters. He gave up a leadoff single to Colin Mackle in the eighth, but Jake Wortman threw him out trying to steal.
Bucknell recorded eight hits in the game, highlighted by Voytovich's third three-hit game of the season. Voytovich also stole two bases. Kyle Lyons added two hits and a stolen base.
Amory and Mackle recorded two hits apiece for the Red Foxes, who had seven in the game.
Bucknell is scheduled to play at home again this weekend, when Rhode Island comes in for a three-game series. The Bison and Rams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon, followed by a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
