SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Amar Tahirovic, Michael Owen, Tim Zelikovsky, and Brendan McDonald were all winners in both singles and doubles, and the Bucknell men's tennis team defeated Colgate 5-2 on Friday at Drumlins Tennis Center. The win was Bucknell's 12th in a row, the fifth-longest streak in team history, and the Bison improved to 2-0 in Patriot League play.
Back in action for the first time in nearly two weeks, the Bison jumped out to a quick lead in the match by continuing their recent doubles dominance. Bucknell collected the doubles point for the 13th straight dual competition, and the team is now a collective 32-10 in dual doubles matches and 28-3 during the 12-match winning streak.
The all-senior tandem of Michael Owen and Nick Mueller defeated Jack Selati and Ben Vlassis 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, and then the all-freshman duo of Amar Tahirovic and Oscar Bain Moreno de Vegas won 6-4 in the No. 2 spot. Junior Tim Zelikovski and freshman Brendan McDonald made it a doubles sweep with a 7-5 win at No. 3.
Tahirovic improved to a team-best 21-7 overall, 12-4 in duals, and 6-1 at No. 1 singles with his 6-0, 6-4 win over Selati in the top spot. It was the freshman's sixth straight win, and he did not drop a set in the entire month of March.
Bucknell also picked up singles wins in the 3-4-5 spots in the lineup from Owen, Zelikovsky, and McDonald. Owen and Zelikovsky both won in straight sets, while McDonald dropped his opening set against Aidan Lee before taking the next two 6-4 and 6-3 to claim the match.
Colgate's singles wins came from Vlassis at No. 2 and Tajas Gupta at No. 6.
