LEWISBURG, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison softball team (9-17) concluded the three-game series versus the Colgate Raiders with a heartbreaking 5-3 defeat. The Bison led 3-2 entering the top of the seventh inning before Colgate hit a three-run bomb to take the lead. The win gave Colgate the 2-1 series victory.
Recap
Madison Roukey started in the circle for the Bison. Roukey faced adversity in the first inning when three walks loaded the bases, but the hurler kept calm and induced a grounder to end the inning without allowing a run.
Neither team advanced a threat until the third inning when Savannah Jones entered the circle. A single and a hit by pitch offered Colgate a chance, but a grounder to Jones removed the issue.
Bucknell used the momentum from escaping the jam to score first. Annabella Hawkins reached on an error, and Chase Knapp sacrificed her to second base. A grounder by Haley Speicher advanced Hawkins to third. Zoie Smith was given nothing of value to swing at, so she walked. Jones delivered a scorching single to score Hawkins and give Bucknell a 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-1 until the top of the fifth inning. A walk and a home run by Adrienne Nardone provided a 2-1 lead for the Raiders. A single followed, which led to Kaiya Burton entering the circle for Bucknell. Burton prevented any further runs.
The Bison counterattacked in their fifth-inning frame. Hawkins led off with a single, and Knapp was nailed by a pitch. Speicher reached a fielder's choice as Hawkins was thrown out at third. Smith delivered an RBI single to tie the game. Jones' sacrifice fly granted Bucknell a 3-2 lead.
Colgate placed a runner on second base in the top of the sixth inning, but a double play turned by Noelle Gardon and Hawkins off a Colgate lineout eliminated the threat.
The Raiders stole the game in the top of the seventh. A leadoff single chased Burton and brought Olivia Marinelli into the circle. A pop-up, walk, and a grounder set up two on and two outs. Colgate was down to its final strike when Quinn Livesay launched a missile over the left field fence. Colgate went from trailing 3-2 to leading 5-3. A swinging strikeout was small consolation for the Bison.
The Bison tried to extend the game. Knapp led off with a double off the center field wall, but three straight hard-hit outs ended the game and gave the series win to Colgate.
