17-Run Outburst Helps Bucknell Baseball Earn Doubleheader Split at Navy
3/18/2023 9:00:00 PM | Baseball
After dropping Friday's game 8-6 and Saturday's opener 7-6 – two games that featured wild momentum swings throughout – Bucknell piled up a season-high 17 runs in game three of the series and now has a chance to gain a weekend split when the two teams meet again on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Henry Mitchell's walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning was the difference in Saturday's opener, which included a combined five home runs.
Sherwin is now 7-for-12 in the series and raised his season average to .419 (13-31). Sherwin went 12-for-18 in this corresponding four-game series against Navy last season at Depew Field, and in 14 career games against Navy, he is 27-for-53 (.509) with 19 RBIs and 21 runs scored. He now has two career four-hit games and two career games with five or more RBIs, all coming against the Midshipmen.
Have a day Anthony Sherwin! He's now 3-for-3 with 5 RBIs in the game, and the Bison have broken it open in the 5th. #rayBucknell

GAME 1: Navy 7, Bucknell 6
In the opener, Bucknell overcame a 5-2 deficit with a four-run fifth-inning, but Navy tied it with a two-out solo homer from Colin Smith in the sixth and won it on Mitchell's walk-off blast leading off the seventh. The Mitchell homer was the first run all season allowed by Bison freshman reliever Ryan Osinski (0-1).
Jacob Corson and Sean Keys went deep for the Bison, the latter giving them a 2-1 lead in the third.
Two-run singles by Kyle Rausch and Brock Murtha gave Navy a 5-2 lead after three, but the Bison surged ahead with a four-run inning of their own in the fifth. Corson's solo homer made it 5-3 and another run scored on an errant pickoff attempt, Jacob Terwilliger doubled into the left-field corner to tie it up. Billy Kender came up with another big two-out hit to score pinch-runner Mason Kelly and give Bucknell a 6-5 lead.
After Smith's home run tied it in the sixth, Bucknell loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh. Murtha (1-0) moved from third base to the mound and recorded a strikeout to escape the jam, setting up Mitchell's dramatic homer moments later.
GAME 2: Bucknell 17, Navy 4
Bucknell collected 14 hits and drew nine walks in a runaway win in game two. In addition to Sherwin's second-career four-hit game, Nic Adamo and Mason Kelly had two hits apiece, and Will Greer (1-3) pitched 5.1 solid innings for his first win of the season.
The Bison scored in the top of the first for the third straight time in the series, this one on Kender's RBI ground out to score Sherwin, who had led off the game with a double. Bucknell made it 3-0 in the fourth when a two-out throwing error kept the inning alive, and then Sherwin knocked in two runs with a single to right.
Bucknell broke it open with six runs in the fifth and eight more in the sixth. Sherwin's three-run double to deep left-center was the big blow in the fifth, and then the Bison took advantage of some wildness from the Navy bullpen in the sixth. Adamo, Chris Klein, and Kelly started the rally with singles before Kyle Lyons walked with the bases loaded. Sherwin followed with a single for his sixth RBI of the game, and then Bucknell added six more runs without the benefit of a hit. Two runs scored on wild pitches, Corson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Kender and Keys both walked to force in runs, and freshman pinch-hitter Michael Trommer hit a sacrifice fly for his first career RBI.
Greer allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out three. Graeme Carroll recorded the last five outs and allowed only an unearned run.
Liam Golden (1-2) took the loss for Navy, allowing three runs (one earned) in four innings.
