MORAGA, Calif. – The Bucknell men's tennis team traveled all the way to the West Coast to put its longest winning streak in 25 years on the line, and the Bison came through with a big 4-3 win over Saint Mary's on Wednesday at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex. With freshman Amar Tahirovic providing the clinching point at No. 2 singles, Bucknell captured its 10th consecutive win to improve to 10-4 on the season.
This is now the fifth-longest winning streak in team history and the longest since the 1998 team started its season with 15 straight victories.
The Bison set the tone with some more impressive doubles play. Harrison Gold and Brendan McDonald locked up the doubles point and improved to 9-0 together at No. 1 doubles with a 7-5 win over Pierre Lieutaud and All-West Coast Conference honoree James Watt. The No. 3 doubles team of Michael Owen and Nick Mueller was also victorious by a 6-2 margin over Mathis Moysan and Carlos Ramos.
Mueller spotted Moysan the first set at No. 3 singles but stormed back to win 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, which made the match 2-2 after Watt won at No. 1 and Ramos at No. 4 for Saint Mary's.
McDonald, a freshman who improved his season doubles record to 21-3, also won his No. 6 singles match against Lieutaud, 6-4, 7-5, to bring the Bison to the brink of victory. Tahirovic clinched it at No. 2 with a 7-6, 7-6 nailbiter against Diego Jarry. Jarry held serve at 5-6 to extend the match, but Tahirovic prevailed 7-3 in the tiebreaker to claim his team-leading 18th singles win of the season.
Once the match had been decided, Caelan Potts won a three-setter over Tim Zelikovsky at No. 5 to bring the final to 4-3.
Bucknell will look to make it 11 straight wins on Saturday when Chestnut Hill comes to Lewisburg for a 2 p.m. match.
