Walk-Off Sunday: Bison Baseball Wins Pair of Extra-Inning Games to Sweep Series from Rhode Island
3/12/2023 7:01:00 PM | Baseball
Both games games Sunday were scheduled for seven innings but required extra frames as both teams received good pitching and strong defense. Tyler O'Neill tossed an eight-inning complete game to pick up his second win of the season in the opener, and Will Greer allowed only one run over 5.1 innings in the nightcap. Lefty Nick Mulvey earned his first collegiate win in relief in game two.
Most importantly for the Bison, after a few shaky defensive games over the last two weeks, they played error-free baseball on Sunday and made a number of stellar plays in the field.
Winners of three straight, Bucknell (5-9) will play a non-league game at UMBC on Tuesday before heading to Annapolis for a four-game series at Navy to start Patriot League play.

GAME 1: Bucknell 3, Rhode Island 2 (8 innings)
There was high drama in game one of the doubleheader, as Anthony Sherwin tied it with a double off the wall in right in the bottom of the seventh, and then Kender delivered the winning run in the eighth.
Sean Keys' sacrifice fly in the first inning gave the Bison a 1-0 lead, but Alex Ramirez hit a two-run homer in the second. Bucknell cut down two runners at the plate to keep it a 2-1 game in to the late innings. Jack Hopko followed the Ramirez blast with a single, and then he was thrown out at home on Rob Butler's drive off the left-field wall thanks to two perfect throws from Jacob Terwilliger and relay man Sherwin.
The Rams had men at second and third with one out after Anthony DePino's double in the fourth. Ramirez hit a comebacker to O'Neill with the runner stopping halfway down the line at third. O'Neill flipped to Keys for the out at third, and then Keys threw back to second to nab DePino straying too far off the bag there.
Bucknell stranded two runners in the sixth but broke through to tie the game against reliever Jon Morrison in the seventh. Kender started the rally with a single, followed by Jake Wortman walk. One out later, Sherwin pulled a shot off the wall in right to bring home Kender. Morrison did well to keep the Bison to just the one run, however. After an intentionally walking Jacob Corson, he got a shallow fly ball and a strikeout to force extra innings.
O'Neill went back out for the eighth and worked around a two-out single, and then the Bison quickly ended it in the bottom half. Tyler Dunn walked, Jacob Terwilliger was hit by a pitch, and Kender ripped a slider into the left-center gap for his first career walk-off hit.
O'Neill (2-2) went eight innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks. O'Neill, who had a nine-inning complete game victory against Army last season, lowered his season ERA to 4.57. Trystan Levesque pitched five strong innings for the Rams, allowing a run on four hits with five strikeouts. Quincy Clark (0-1) took the loss in relief.
The Bison out-hit the Rams 8-7, with Voytovich and Kender collecting two hits apiece.
GAME 2: Bucknell 3, Rhode Island 2 (8 innings)
Braden Perry no-hit Bucknell through five innings in the nightcap, but the Bison rallied again for another dramatic win. Greer was also effective on the mound for the Bison, allowing only one run over 5.1 innings. His only blemish was a bases-loaded walk to Nicholas Toro in the fourth, and Rhode Island took that 1-0 lead all the way into the bottom of the sixth.
Kyle Lyons hustled down the line for an infield single to break up the no-hitter leading off the sixth. Lyons stole second, and one out later Corson hit a rocket up the gap in left-center to tie the game at 1-all. Corson moved up on a ground ball and scored on a wild pitch for a 2-1 Bison lead.
This time it was Rhode Island's turn for a comeback. Addison Kopack doubled with one out, moved to third on Eric Genther's infield hit with two outs, and then scored on Billy Butler's base hit through the left side.
Mulvey (1-0) came out of the bullpen and induced a first-pitch ground out to Keys at third, and later Mulvey overcame a leadoff walk to hang a zero in the top of the eighth.
Colin Maloney (0-1) walked Sherwin and Corson to start the bottom of the eighth, and then on a 3-1 count against reliever Ryan Andrade, Voytovich yanked a fastball on the ground through the left side. It was a close play at the plate, with Sherwin diving across just ahead of the tag, setting off Bucknell's second walk-off celebration of the day.
