MADEIRA BEACH, Fla.- The Bucknell Bison softball team (7-13) ended The Spring Games at Madeira Beach with a 3-0 defeat against Iowa. The Bison battled valiantly but could not push any runs across against the tough Hawkeye defense.
Bucknell's scoring changes were done in by the Hawkeyes throwing out three Bison runners in caught-stealing situations. The Bison pitchers kept the Big 10 team in check yielding only three runs in seven innings. The game ended on a called strike three, with the Bison having runners on second and third.
Recap
Kaiya Burton started in the circle for the Bison.
The Hawkeyes threatened in the top of the first inning by opening the game with two singles. Burton bore down and induced three outs to prevent any first-strike fireworks from Iowa.
Iowa scored in the second inning. With two outs, a Hawkeye triple and single plated the first run. Two more singles followed, but Burton prevented more trouble by obtaining the final out.
The Bison threatened in the bottom of the third inning. Elena Horn led off with a single, and Ava Aguilar laid down a sacrifice attempt that resulted in her reaching safety and Horn ending up at third as the second baseman flubbed the catch. However, Aguilar was thrown out trying to steal second, and Horn was caught at home when she attempted to sneak home when the ball bounced away. Annabella Hawkins followed with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. She stayed there as Haley Speicher grounded out to end the inning.
Iowa rode the momentum to a score in the fourth inning. A single was followed by a fielder's choice, which saw an error as the Iowa hitter alertly tried for second, and the resulting fracas placed the Hawkeye on third base. The next batter hit a double for the 2-0 lead. A single happened next, putting runners at the corners. But the Bison defense gunned down the lead runner at home on a fielder's choice, and a fly-out ended the inning.
Neither team advanced any serious threats until the seventh inning when Iowa added a key insurance run via a home run for the 3-0 lead.
The Bison battled hard in their final at-bat. Chase Knapp reached on a throwing error by the third baseman, and Horn doubled to place runners at second and third. But Aguilar was called out on strikes when she checked her swing, and Iowa escaped with the win.
