SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Michael Owen and Brendan McDonald earned straight-set singles victories after Bucknell had secured the doubles point, but Villanova came out on top in two three-setters to steal a 4-3 decision from the Bison on Saturday afternoon at the Central PA Tennis Center.
McDonald teamed with Harrison Gold for a 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, and the all-freshman tandem of Amar Tahirovic and Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega won 6-3 at No. 2 to get the Bison (0-4) out to an early lead.
In singles, Owen was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Eitan Khromchenko at No. 4. McDonald was 2-4 down in his opening set against Trey Fourticq on Court 6 before claiming the final 10 games of the match to win 6-4, 6-0.
Villanova (1-2) got back in it with straight-set wins from Tighe Brunetti at No. 2 singles and Cooper Gordon at No. 3. Bain Moreno de Vega won the opening set in a tiebreaker from Ryan Nguyen at No. 5, but Nguyen came back to win the final two sets by 6-3 counts. And at No. 1, Gold dropped his first set in a tiebreaker, won the second set 6-3, but dropped the final set 6-3 to Joshua Robinson.
The Bison are right back in action tomorrow in South Williamsport when Drexel visits for a noon start.
