CHARLESTON, S.C. – Tyler Dunn belted a tie-breaking three-run home run in the third inning, and the bottom third of the order combined for seven of Bucknell's 12 hits in a 12-3 rout of Merrimack on Sunday morning at the Swig & Swine Classic at Shipyard Park. Starter Tyler O'Neill struck out eight on the way to his first win of the season, and Nick Mulvey earned a 10-out save to help the Bison finish off a 2-1 weekend.
Fresh off a 7-2 win over MAC preseason favorite Ball State on Saturday, the Bison came right back for a 9 a.m. start and turned in another strong performance in all phases.
While Dunn's first home run of the season was the big blow, 7-8-9 hitters Mason Kelly (2-4), Jake Wortman (2-4), and Jacob Terwilliger (3-5) combined to go 7-for-13 with six runs scored. Dunn had a four-RBI day, and he and Sean Keys also had two-hit games.
O'Neill (1-1) was charged with three runs on seven hits while striking out eight with just one walk in his 5.2 innings of work. Mulvey gave up just three hits and struck out two while covering the final 3.1 innings.
Michael Golankiewicz gave Merrimack (0-3) a 1-0 lead with a home run in the top of the second, but Bucknell got the run right back in the bottom of the frame. Billy Kender beat out an infield hit to start the inning, he moved up on an errant pickoff throw, and scored on an RBI single by Keys.
A walk, a hit batsman, and Dunn's 3-run blast to right-center gave the Bison the lead for good in the third. Jacob Corson's RBI ground out made it 5-1 after four, but the Warriors got back in it with a pair of two-out runs in the sixth. Mulvey induced a comebacker to strand the bases loaded and keep it a 5-3 game, and then the Bison broke it open with two runs in the sixth and five more in the seventh.
Wortman's single and Terwilliger's double ignited the key sixth-inning rally. Good situational hitting by Corson and Grant Voytovich plated both runners on ground balls. Wortman and Terwilliger both drove in runs in the seventh, and three more came in thanks to two walks and a hit batsman, all with the bases loaded.
Bucknell returns to action on Tuesday at Pittsburgh, and then the Bison head back down south again next weekend for two games against Western Michigan and one against North Carolina A&T in East Greensboro, N.C.
