Women's Tennis Defeats Washington & Lee, 6-3, for First Spring Win

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Bucknell women's tennis team collected two doubles wins and grabbed four singles victories, playing best-of-nine, to defeat perennial ODAC power Washington & Lee 6-3 on the road Saturday. The Bison improved to 3-6 (0-1 PL) with the win and handed the Generals their first loss of the season.
Tyne Miller won her second singles match of the weekend and joined Anna Lajos with a victory at No. 2 doubles. Abby Platt also earned a singles win in the No. 3 spot and teamed up with Whitney King to win in the top doubles position. Mirra Manolov and Caroline Marcus added points in singles as well by securing wins in the No. 5 and No. 6 singles spots, respectively.
Miller and her opponent Gabriella Moss, represented one of four singles matchups that went three sets. Her 2-6, 6-3, 10-6 decision helped her improve to 7-9 on the season. Miller and Lajos picked up another point at No. 2 doubles with an 8-4 win.
Platt extended Bucknell's lead to 4-3 with another tight victory at No. 3 singles, topping junior Izzy Koziol 6-4, 7-6 (5).
It was the freshman, Manolov, that sealed the Bison win, defeating Grace Lorenz 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5 singles to give Bucknell a 5-3 lead in the match.
Marcus, who missed Friday's contest against George Washington, provided late drama in Saturday's match with her win over Margaret Carlton. Playing to a 10-point tiebreaker in the third set, she defeated the Washington & Lee senior 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 to end the evening.
Despite falling in three sets, Lajos and Kate Novak both forced third sets before losing the tiebreakers.
Looking ahead, Bucknell plays one more match on the road at St. Bonaventure on Saturday, Feb. 18 before returning home for its first home match against Coppin State on Feb. 19.
