Women's Swim & Dive Finishes Second at 2023 Bucknell Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's swim & dive team once again moved up the leaderboard and took second place out of seven teams at the Bucknell Invitational Sunday, totaling 1,281 points to finish behind only UConn (1,572.5). The Bison entered the day trailing second-place Fordham by 42.5 points and overtook them by the third event on Sunday.

Sunday's efforts were highlighted by Sydney Dettmann's performance in the 200 butterfly. The first-year registered the third-best time in school history, a 2:01.72, to finish runner-up in the event and contribute 28 points towards the Bison cause. It was the team's highest individual place of the meet.
Dettmann beat her prelims time (2:03.78), which already ranked top 10 in school history, by more than two seconds in the finals. Skye Sunderhauf joined Dettmann in the 200 butterfly A finals and placed fourth with a 2:04.05, and Rylie Giles won the B finals with a 2:06.73.
Also earning fourth-place points was Esme Hunter in the 200 backstroke with a 2:00.34. She swam the fourth leg of the fourth-place finishing 400 freestyle relay team as well, following Virginia Hastings, Giles and Kayla Lichtner. The group came in at 3:27.07 in the final race of the evening.
Hastings took sixth in the 100 freestyle A finals, and Ashley Piacentino grabbed eighth. Four other Bison scored points in the event, during which Bucknell moved past Fordham into second.
Hanna Bingley earned seventh-place points in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:21.00, while Kate Handley just missed out on a program top-10 time with a 2:19.52 that won the B finals. Rounding out Bucknell's top-eight placers were Claire Kehley and Kelly Byrne in the 1650 free. Kehley placed seventh with a 17:18.35, followed by Byrne in eighth with a 17:19.80.
The Bison now break for the semester and return to action on Saturday, Jan. 13 to face Army in a dual meet in West Point.
