LEWISBURG, Pa. - Isabella King led a balanced Bucknell offensive attack with 10 points, including a pair of free throws with 10.8 seconds remaining, to lift the Bison women's basketball team to a 49-44 victory over FDUÂ in front of 1,267 fans on Education Day in Sojka Pavilion on Wednesday. There were 16 lead changes in the contest that also featured five ties. The largest lead for either squad was the final five-point margin.
Emma Theodorsson added nine points and seven rebounds for Bucknell (1-2), which led by two points at halftime. Caroline Dingler was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field for eight points to go along with three rebounds and a pair of assists.
The Bison made their final seven free throws in the last 2:12 and finished the game 11 of 14 overall from the line.Â
Bucknell's defense forced 14 turnovers, including nine in the second half. FDU shot 28.1 percent from the field.
Abby Conklin led the Knights with 14 points, while Lilly Parke grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, including four on the offensive end. FDU registered 15 offensive rebounds.
"We are thrilled to get a win," said head coach Trevor Woodruff. "The key to the first two games is what we got from them. I did see some improvement. It is a small thing but I thought our footwork was better. We weren't called for traveling. We used jump-starts. Today, I saw improvement and I saw some great grit. It was a challenging game and we fought through it."
The first quarter was as tight as the entire game as it featured eight lead chances. Bucknell had six different scorers in the period to keep pace with FDU's lightning fast three-point offense. The Knights dropped three of their six three-pointers for the game. The Bison appeared to have the 14-13 lead heading into the second quarter but FDU's Teneisia Brown tallied a quick layup to grab the 15-14 advantage as the seconds ran off.Â
The Bison started the second quarter with some three-point magic of their own to build a 22-18 lead. FDU rallied back to tie the game at 25-25. But the process took time as both defenses stiffened up and refused easy shots. The Bison grabbed a 27-25 halftime lead when Grace Sullivan converted two free throws with one minute remaining.Â
The third period turned into a defensive stalemate. Both squads only scored nine points apiece, and only seven points combined were tallied by the media timeout. Bucknell increased its lead to 33-30 before a 4-0 FDU run gave the momentum back to the Knights. That is when Kaylee Reinbeau stepped up. The senior forward stationed herself in the corner, received the excellent pass from Dingler, and calmly drained the three-pointer as the buzzer expired. The schoolchildren rejoiced with thunderous aplomb. Bucknell had the 36-34 lead entering the final quarter.Â
The fourth quarter also started with slow offensive production. Twice, the Knights would tie up the game at 36-36 and 38-38. Dingler sank a free throw at the 6:20 mark to put Bucknell up one. Then two minutes later, Theodorsson threaded a beautiful pass to the wide-open senior. Dingler sank the shot to give Bucknell a four-point lead that would hold up.Â
With 32 seconds later and the score at 43-40 Bucknell, FDU started trying to extend the game with fouls. Bucknell would go 6-for-6 down the stretch as Blake Matthews, King, and Theodorsson all calmly converted. FDU scored twice but it was to no avail. Bucknell celebrated a 49-44 Education Day win to the great delight of the schoolkids.Â
