PHILADELPHIA, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison women's basketball team (0-2) suffered a 77-53 defeat on Saturday night against the Temple Owls (2-1). The Owls used a 26-11 second quarter to pull away from the Bison. Emma Theodorsson led the team with 12 points. Grace Sullivan tied a career-high in points with 10. The towering sophomore also added seven rebounds.Â
"I thought we responded well in the second half," said head coach Trevor Woodruff. "The team never stopped fighting and I saw several encouraging things. We are excited to get back to work and play FDU on Education Day this Wednesday."
Temple shot 31-of-70 (44.3%) while Bucknell hit 15-of-49 (30.6%) from the field. The Bison were a competent 20-of-27 (74.1%) from the charity stripe.Â
The Owls used a balanced attack to beat the Bison. Six players scored in double-digits, as Ines Piper's 13 points served as the highest-scoring output. Temple collected 22 offensive rebounds to power its offensive production.Â
Temple's 26 points in the second stanza, combined with outscoring Bucknell 15-6 in the first quarter, gave the Owls a comfortable 41-17 halftime advantage. Temple shot 12-of-21 (57.1%)Â and outrebounded Bucknell 15-3Â in the second period. Piper scored eight points on 4-of-5 shooting.Â
Both teams started slowly, and Temple only led 5-2 at the first media timeout. The Bison's attack was smothered by the Owls' aggressive and swarming talons. Bucknell was flummoxed all game and committed 24 turnovers. Temple slipped away to lead 15-6 by the opening quarter's conclusion.Â
The Bison never quit and played Temple on even terms throughout the second half. Both teams scored 36 points over the final two quarters. Sullivan scored half of her 10 points in the third period. Ashley O'Connor also burned brightly in the second half, recording two swishing three-pointers. Theodorsson kept attacking and slashing to draw foul shots. The sophomore was nearly perfect at the line, hitting 5-of-6 second-half chances. Â
In the fourth quarter, Temple established its largest lead, 66-33, but it did not last long. Theodorsson immediately countered with a layup to jumpstart a 9-1 Bucknell run. The teams traded points before the scoring ended, with Blake Matthews scoring on a driving layup.Â
After fighting recent injuries, Matthews triumphantly returned to the court, scoring five points and five rebounds. All five points came in the second half. All 12 Bison players participated in the game.Â
