IOWA CITY, Iowa – Josie Durr scored the go-ahead goal 4:31 into overtime, and fifth-seeded Iowa tacked on one more in the 109th minute to turn back a determined Bucknell side in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before a record crowd at the Iowa Soccer Complex on Friday night.
The most decorated senior class in Bucknell history saw their time in Orange & Blue end with three Patriot League championships and three NCAA appearances, the last two of which went into extra time. Iowa's winning goal was eerily similar to Ohio State's overtime goal last season, as a Bison defender got a foot on the ball at the edge of the box to momentarily break up the play. But the ball fell to Durr, a seventh-year senior, who shot first-time through a sea of bodies and past screened goalkeeper Jenna Hall.
Bucknell finished the campaign with a 12-4-5 record, with the 12 wins tied for the second-most in team history. Iowa, the Big Ten Tournament champion, improved to 13-4-4 and will play fourth-seeded Georgia in the second round.
Bucknell's defense was rock-solid all night. Center backs Brooke Tracey and Eva Frankovic stood tall against Iowa's speedy forwards, and they both blocked numerous shots. Outside backs Katie Schiano and Meghan White logged miles on the flanks, and central midfielders Hannah Stuck and Sydney Hess also defended well while holding their own in the air.
The Bison were put under major pressure in the latter stages of the second half, but Hall made two sensational saves and also got a little help from her crossbar. Hall went high to punch Samantha Cary's rising shot over the bar, and then Rielly Fetty headed a looping shot off the crossbar on the ensuing corner kick.
With 6:30 to go, Kenzie Roling struck a shot off the woodwork and Stuck cleared away the rebound. Hall's best and most important save came with 90 seconds to go when she dove to her left to rob Sofia Bush.
Iowa outshot the Bison 9-1 in the first half, forcing Hall into four saves. Only one was a truly high-quality chance, and that came just four minutes in when Elle Otto got a half-step on her mark but had her low shot saved and held by Hall.
Bucknell found space in the attacking third hard to come by against an Iowa team that conceded only one goal in its three Big Ten Tournament games. The Hawkeyes won the title as the eight seed, upsetting three ranked teams along the way in No. 12 Michigan State (2-1), No. 5 Penn State (1-0), and No. 12 Wisconsin (1-0).
Henna Andican's flicked header on goal in the final minute of the half was Bucknell's first shot on goal. Andican logged three of Bucknell's shots on the night.
The standing-room-only crowd of 2,639 was the largest ever to see a game at the Iowa Soccer Complex. The Hawkeyes were hosting an NCAA Tournament match for the first time, and they ended Bucknell's nine-game unbeaten streak (6-0-3).
Hall, Frankovic, Stuck, Tracey, and Lea Tarzy comprised a senior class that became the first in school history to win three league championships. This group was close in all three NCAA appearances. The Bison fell 2-0 to No. 1 national seed and eventual College Cup participant Rutgers in 2021; they fell 1-0 in overtime at Ohio State last season; and they once again kept a clean sheet through 90 minutes against Iowa.
