HAMILTON, N.Y. – Aidan Davock headed in the game's lone goal in the 54th minute to lift Colgate to a 1-0 win over visiting Bucknell in Patriot League men's soccer action on Saturday evening at Beyer-Small '76 Field.
It was a defensive struggle throughout, as the two teams conceded only 15 total shot attempts. Charlie Holmes' header over the bar off a corner kick was the best look for either side in the first half, and then Colgate (4-7-1, 2-2-1 PL) broke through nine minutes into the second.
Off a simple throw-in along the right touch line, Alejandro Coury dribbled into space and lofted an outside-of-the-boot pass into the box, where Davock nodded it home. The senior striker now has five of Colgate's eight goals this season.
Bucknell ramped up the pressure in the final 15 minutes. David Krumov switched to his left foot and got a solid strike on the ball from the top of the area, but Oliver Townend was there for the save. With two minutes to go, Townend got an important punch on a back-post corner kick service from Marco Valentic.
The Bison had one final chance on a free kick from 40 yards out with just over a minute remaining. Colgate cleared the initial service, and after the ball was recycled in, Townend collected a ball that was headed straight up.
Bucknell (1-8-2, 0-4-1 PL), which was coming off a season-high three-goal showing last Sunday against American, finished with a narrow 8-7 edge in shots. Townend and Bucknell keeper Jake Nicoll made three saves apiece.
The Bison are back in action next Saturday at noon at Holy Cross.
