Volleyball Sinks Navy for Fourth 2-0 PL Weekend of 2023
10/28/2023 6:38:00 PM | Volleyball
LEWISBURG, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison women's volleyball team (13-9, 9-4 PL) stretched its winning streak to six games with a 3-1 triumph (25-19, 20-25, 25-22, 25-19) over the Navy Midshipmen (14-7, 6-6 PL) on Saturday evening. The Bison controlled most of the match due to Catherine Jamison's game-high 20 kills. The senior hit a robust .375 to lead the Bison attack. Tijana Kostic, Sidney Shaffer, and Riley Tucker all chipped in seven kills to reinforce Jamison. Bucknell's clean service proved the difference as Navy made 14 service errors to the Bison's seven. Bucknell's nine conference wins are the most since the 2006 season when Bucknell collected 10 PL victories.Â
Recap
The first set provided the tenor of the match, a hotly fought contest. Navy won the first round of back-and-forth, taking a narrow 6-5 lead. Bucknell turned on the heat with a 10-2 run to establish a decisive advantage. Jamison provided three kills and two block assists during the stretch. Navy battled back, getting within four points on multiple occasions, but the Bison kept a decent distance from the pesky foe. Navy made one last push to cut within 20-16, but the Bison shut the door with a 3-0 run on two Tucker kills and a Libby Nieporte service ace. Navy tallied three more points, which mattered naught as Jamison supplied two more kills to win the set, 25-19.Â
The second set started like the first one, with plenty of back-and-forth action. With the score knotted at 8-8, Navy went on a 3-0 run to establish separation. The Mids kept that distance until the score was 14-11, where the Bison used a 4-0 streak to take the lead. The teams traded points and then Navy used a 6-0 run to take the 21-16 advantage. Navy would not give up the lead despite the Bison's best efforts and won the second set, 25-20.Â
Bucknell wanted the third set badly and broke out to leads of 5-1 and 9-4. Navy spent most of the time with the score in the teens, attempting to tie up the game, but Bucknell kept the Annapolis squad at bay. However, the Midshipmen finally put together a 5-0 run to tie the score at 19-19. Bucknell was unperturbed immediately, launching a 3-0 run powered by Jamison and Kostic kills and a Tucker block. Navy tallied twice, but a 3-1 run capped off by a Jamison kill ended the set, 25-22 Bucknell.Â
Navy was desperate to keep the game going and stormed out to a 5-0 in the fourth set. It proved but a temporary barricade for the Bison. Bucknell tied it up 9-9, with the last three points coming off Kostic's kills. The teams traded points to make it 12-12. Then Bucknell went on a 3-1 run, and it was the last time Navy led or tied in the game. The Mids had one burst left in the arsenal and crept within 19-18. Bucknell ended any aspirations of a fifth set with a 6-1 run. Navy committed three errors, Bucknell posted two kills, and the Mids couldn't handle Kaitlyn Taylor's serve. Bucknell had the set and match win.Â
Notes
Hardy's 23 digs gave her 462 on the year, now tied for fifth in single-season Bucknell history with Brandi Trapasso. Hardy needs 14 digs to tie Kristen Parks' 2014 mark.Â
The six-game conference win streak is the best such run of PL winning for Bucknell since the 2003 season when the Bison won seven straight games. Coincidentally, wins over Navy served as bookends for that stretch.Â
Up Next
Bucknell remains home next weekend to face Lafayette (Nov. 4) and Lehigh (Nov. 5). The Lehigh contest will serve as Senior Day.Â
