RESULTS
LYNCHBURG, Va. – Amar Tahirovic began his singles slate with a three-set victory, and he paired with Brendan McDonald for two more doubles wins as the Bucknell men's tennis team enjoyed a strong day two at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships at Liberty on Thursday.
Tahirovic was exempt into the Silver Draw – the second of three levels – and on Thursday morning he outlasted Erden Er of Temple 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. Tahirovic will next play Delaware's Karol Malirz on Friday morning.
Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega won twice in the Bronze Draw on Wednesday, and he advanced to the Silver Draw with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Momin Khan of George Mason. In his first match at the next level, Bain was ousted in three sets by James Madison's Francisco Sinopoli, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.
Like Tahirovic, Adam Stavrakas and Tim Zelikovsky also began singles play in the Silver Draw but dropped their first matches. Both will play in the consolation round on Friday.
Bucknell also saw its two all-sophomore doubles pairs move into the Silver Draw round of 16. Tahirovic and McDonald won closely contested second and third-round matches on Thursday. They defeated Delaware's Alexandre Gluck and Ids Waterbolk 8-6, and then needed a tiebreaker to hold off Aathreya Mahesh and Esteve Aguste of James Madison. The Bison pair will next face Cooper Gordon and Will Monahan of Villanova.
Bain and Stavrakas defeated Michael Fourticq and Thomas Wakefield of Villanova, 8-4. The Bison duo then fell 8-6 to Gregoire Barety and Dante Russo but they will next play a team from George Mason in Silver Draw action on Friday.
