YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Regan LaVigna scored on a redirect on Youngstown State's only shot on goal in the match, and the Penguins held off Bucknell 1-0 on Sunday in non-league women's soccer action at National Bank Field.
Bucknell (3-2) was kept off the scoreboard for the first time this season and saw its two-match winning streak come to an end. Youngstown State, which played a scoreless draw with St. Bonaventure on Thursday, is now 1-4-1.
Bucknell outshot Youngstown State 13-3, including an 8-1 edge in shots on goal. But the Penguins made their one and only dangerous moment count. Right on the hour mark, Haley Curtis sent in a cross from the top left corner of the box, and LaVigna one-timed it into the back of the net.
Youngstown State goalkeeper Brooklynn Kirkpatrick finished with eight saves, most of them routine catches on shots from distance as the Bison struggled to find space against a packed-in defense.
Bucknell's two best chances came in the first half. In the 12th minute, Rylee Donaldson slipped a pass to Kenar Gelman in the right channel, but the shot went right at the keeper. Kirkpatrick's best of the day was a nice kick save on Henna Andican after she was played in by Teresa Deda.
This was the first of five straight road contests for Bucknell. Next up is a trip to Towson on Thursday night.
