TOWSON, Md. – The Bucknell women's soccer team ran into a red-hot Towson side on Thursday night, and the Tigers prevailed 2-0 in a non-league game at Tiger Stadium. The Bison fell to 3-3 on the season heading into a date with No. 17 West Virginia, while Towson won its fourth in a row to move to 5-1-1.
Jasmine Hamid had a hand in both goals for Towson. In the 23rd minute, she carried the ball into the box on a three-on-two rush and was taken down, resulting in a penalty. Nia Christopher scored from the spot to put the Tigers on the board.
Goalkeeper Jenna Hall, who was scored upon for the first time all season, made a good save on Hamid in the 64th minute, but moments later the All-CAA forward scored on a back-post header from Reese Borden's corner kick.
Bucknell pushed for a goal in the final 20 minutes but could not find a finishing touch. Rylee Donaldson was on the receiving end of a beautiful through ball from Paige Temple, but her shot went just wide with keeper Riley Melendez charging off her line.
Melendez's best save in a strong performance came with just inside 10 minutes to play, when she dove to her right to smother a hard shot from long distance by Sydney Hess. Four minutes later, Teresa Deda whipped in a free kick that bounced around in the box, but the Bison could not find space for a shot.
Bucknell outshot Towson 12-5, including 7-2 in the second half. Hall tallied three saves and Melendez four, and the Tigers held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Bison have one more non-conference game before the start of Patriot League play, and it will be a tough test at nationally ranked West Virginia on Sunday afternoon. The Mountaineers are 3-2-2 after falling 1-0 at home to Clemson on Thursday.
