LEWISBURG, Pa. – Backed by an MVP performance from freshman Bri Frazilus, the Bucknell volleyball team earned its second straight tournament title after posting 3-0 sweeps of NJIT and LIU on Saturday at the Bucknell Invitational. The Bison, who also defeated George Washington in four sets on Friday night, have started a season 6-0 for the first time in school history.
Frazilus, who earned All-Tournament honors last week at the Red Flash Classic and was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Tuesday, turned in another impressive performance in her first career home matches. She logged 42 kills and 38 digs in the three contests and tallied double-doubles against George Washington and LIU.
Teammates Cat Jamison and Sarina Singer joined Frazilus on the Bucknell Invitational All-Tournament Team. Jamison led the team with 16 kills against GW on Friday, and she finished the weekend with 35 kills and a stellar .342 hitting percentage. Singer collected 18 kills and 17 digs in a solid all-around weekend.
Bucknell 3, NJIT 0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-17)
Frazilus led all players with 13 kills as Bucknell cruised to the three-set sweep in Saturday's 9 a.m. match. Jamison tallied nine kills and Allie Lopez followed with seven, and libero Jordan Hardy paced a strong defensive effort with a match-high 18 digs.
First-year setters Laura Caro (19) and Caleigh O'Connell (17) combined for 36 assists, while Jen Sivak had a team-high five block assists.
The opening set was all square at 18-18 after NJIT scored four straight points, but the Bison answered with three straight points of their own, sparked by kills from Lopez and Frazilus, to open up a 21-18 lead. NJIT pulled within 22-20 after Bison attack error, but a Caro kill and two NJIT errors closed out the set.
The second set was back-and-forth until Bucknell's 6-0 run flipped a 16-15 deficit into a 21-16 lead. Hardy had two service aces in that surge, and a combined block from Sivak and Camryn Anderson gave the Bison the commanding five-point cushion.
Bucknell wasted little time jumping out to a big lead in the third set, as another Hardy ace keyed a 5-0 run that made it 8-3. The Bison led by as many as eight points on a couple of occasions, and after NJIT made a brief run to close within 19-16, Bucknell scored another five in succession to get to match point. Sivak and Lisa Zoch combined on a block to make it 24-16, and Frazilus closed it out with her 13th kill.
Bucknell hit .232 as a team while holding NJIT to .140. The Bison outdug the Highlanders 58-44.
Courtney Branch led NJIT with seven kills in 14 attempts.
Bucknell 3, LIU (25-22, 25-20, 25-16)
Frazilus (16) and Jamison (10) combined for 26 kills to lead the Bison to another sweep in the final match of the tournament. Hardy and Frazilus added 15 digs apiece, as Bucknell limited the Sharks to an .059 hitting percentage.
Barbora Hoskova paced LIU with 13 kills, and libero Anastasia Scott had a match-high 20 digs. Scott, the two-time Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Year, represented the Sharks on the All-Tournament Team.
Bucknell hit .209 in the match, and after two tight sets that saw a combined 16 ties and seven lead changes, the Bison took control early and rolled to a 25-16 win in the final set. Caro closed it out in style with a dump for a kill and a service ace.
The Bison head to Buffalo next weekend for the Western New York Invitational.
