ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Bucknell University men's water polo team went 1-1 on the opening day of the Navy Invitational on Saturday. The Bison men fell narrowly to Cal Lutheran, 13-12, before bouncing back with a convincing 18-7 win over Mt. San Antonio in the nightcap.
Game One: Cal Lutheran 13, Bucknell 12.
The two teams traded blows in the first half, combining for 18 goals in an offensive display for both teams. The two squads managed eight ties in the first two periods alone, with Cal Lutheran finding two unanswered goals over the final two minutes to take a 10-8 lead at the break.
Neither team led by more than one goal until the final 25 seconds of the first half in the back-and-forth affair, as Bucknell was bolstered by four goals from sophomore Hasan Mogultay in the opening 16 minutes.
Cal Lutheran started the second half on a run, extending the lead to 13-8 with 4:55 remaining in the game. However, Bucknell battled back, scoring four unanswered goals, including one more from Mogultay with 1:16 remaining, to bring the game within one. Bucknell couldn't find the tying goal in the closing seconds in coming up just short in the contest.
Mogultay scored a career-best six goals in the defeat, while first-year Aleksa Stefanovic started his Bison career with three goals, including two of those in the final run for the Bison in the fourth quarter. Goalkeeper Adrien Touzot made 11 saves in the defeat, while Jack Bruce, Walker Butler, and Matt Ryckman each found the back of the cage once.
Game Two: Bucknell 18, Mt. San Antonio 7
Bucknell left little doubt in the second game of the day, scoring the game's opening seven goals, and 10 of the first 11, to take a commanding 18-7 win. Bucknell maintained that lead in the second half, keeping the Mounties to at least a 10-goal deficit the rest of the way.
Mogultay scored two of the game's first three goals for the Bison, while Stefanovic, Ryckman, and Shay Gillearn also netted in Bucknell's game-opening, 7-0 run that spanned nearly ten minutes into the second quarter.
Nine different Bison found the back of the cage in the victory, including Ian Shultz, who netted twice for his first career goals in the Orange and Blue. Ryckman tied his career best with three goals, while Stefanovic netted three times for the second straight game. Maxime Touzot also scored his first career goals as a Bison in the win.
Bucknell will have a quick turnaround, with an 8 a.m. matchup against Iona scheduled for Sunday before concluding the Navy Invite with a matchup against Biola at 12:30 p.m.
