BRONX, N.Y.- Despite being racked by exclusions and the grind of a long season, Bucknell (12-16) rallied for an exhilarating 14-12 overtime victory over Mount St. Mary's (11-23) in the fifth place game of the MAWPC Championships on Sunday morning. The Bison lost four players to the three exclusion rule and their late lead but won the overtime period 2-0 to finish 3-0 against the Route 15 Rival in 2025.Â
It was truly a team win with no Bison scoring more than two goals. Aleksa Stefanovic completed his outstanding career with two goals and Jack Dillane, Jack Murad, and Tyler Hedblad joined him in leading the offensive effort.Â
Bucknell led 12-10 with 2:53 remaining before the scrappy Mountaineers tied the game with 25 seconds remaining to force overtime. The Bison defense arose in overtime to hold the Mount scoreless while Hedblad and senior Maxime Touzot delivered the goals.Â
The Bison never trailed in the game and led 5-2 midway through the second quarter on a Nick Karamian goal. The Mount cut the deficit to 6-5 by halftime.Â
The Mountaineers tied the contest at 6-6 29 seconds after halftime and then Bucknell uncorked a 2-0 rally. The Mount responded again to knot the game. Hedblad scored his first goal 36 seconds before the third quarter concluded to regain the lead for the Bison.Â
Mount St. Mary's kept clawing and drew even at 9-9 and 10-10. Ian Shultz and Stefanovic gave Bucknell its 12-10 lead and an apparent regulation victory before the Mount rallied to cause overtime.
Bucknell men's water polo will return in 2026.Â
