LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell volleyball team defeated Holy Cross 3-0 Friday at Davis Gym for its third straight sweep. Bucknell (10-2, 3-0 PL) hit .250 or better in all three sets, registered nine service aces and saw two Bison post double-digit kills in its first of two matches this weekend.
Junior Catherine Jamison led the way with 11 kills on 29 total attempts and a .241 hitting percentage. She was followed by freshman Bri Frazilus, who posted 10 kills with a .320 percentage.
The Bison never trailed in sets one (25-15) and three (25-11), and they rallied back from a 24-22 deficit in the second frame. Bucknell limited Holy Cross to a .059 hitting percentage for the match.
Off to a hot start, Bucknell opened the match with a 5-1 run and delivered six of its nine aces in the opening frame, including two back-to-back by Amanda Tesserot that pushed the lead to 8-3. Jamison recorded five of her kills in the first.
Holy Cross led early in the second, but a 7-0 run gave the Bison an 11-6 advantage. The Crusaders remained within striking distance, however, and erased a 19-15 deficit with a 7-1 run. Holy Cross threatened to even the match at 1-1 with set-point at 24-22, but two Jamison kills and two Crusader attack errors gave way to a 26-24 Bucknell win.
The third set was never in doubt, as Bucknell strung together two 6-0 runs and led by as many as 14 (21-6). Senior Sarina Singer posted two aces in the third, and seven different Bison added kills.
Frazilus added three block assists to her total, Caleigh O'Connell led the group with 16 assists, and fellow freshman Laura Caro contributed 12 assists. Jordan Hardy supplied a team-high 16 digs.
Bucknell has now swept six opponents this fall, and its 3-0 start to league play is its best since 2003. Bucknell opened the 2003 season with sweeps over Army, Holy Cross, Lafayette and Lehigh.
The Bison are back at Davis Gym on Sunday at 3 p.m. for a matchup with defending Patriot League champion Colgate.
