LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Jason Cohen era officially began on Friday afternoon, and the brand new Bison head coach watched his team post five singles victories on the opening day of the Bucknell Invitational at the Varsity Tennis Courts.
Freshmen Amar Tahirovic and Brendan McDonald were dominant in their collegiate debuts, and seniors Nick Mueller, Ink Chen, and Per Astrom were also victorious in singles action.
Tahirovic and Mueller were both straight-set winners in the A Singles flight. Tahirovic, a native of Stuttgart, Germany, breezed past Lafayette's Brady Wisdom 6-0, 6-0. Mueller was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Fabio Varella of Saint Francis (Pa.).
At B Singles, McDonald had little trouble in his first career match, winning 6-2, 6-0 over Mount St. Mary's Pablo Martinez. Chen also moved on to the quarterfinals in the B flight after a 6-4, 6-1 win over Lafayette's Jake Magnusson.
Astrom represented Bucknell in the C Singles flight and outlasted Mount St. Mary's Ben Porto in one of the longest matches of the day, 6-4, 5-7, 11-9.
One impressive streak did come to an end on Friday, as junior Tim Zelikovsky's 15-match winning streak dating back to last season was halted by Elliot Stevens of Mount St. Mary's. Stevens prevailed 10-7 in a third-set tiebreaker.
Mueller and McDonald teamed up for Bucknell's lone doubles win on day one. They held off Varella and Adam Kush of Saint Francis 7-5 in the A flight.
Play resumes on Saturday at 9 a.m., with one round of singles and two rounds of doubles on the agenda.
