WORCESTER, Mass. – Kari Melberger scored in the first minute of the game and Noor Kaur followed with another 92 seconds later, sending the Bucknell field hockey team to a 3-1 road win over Holy Cross on Saturday in the Patriot League openers for both teams.
Gianna Puorro also scored for the Bison, who improved to 2-4 on the season and 1-0 in Patriot League play after beating Holy Cross for the 12th time in the last 13 meetings. The Crusaders fell to 1-6, 0-1, after their first loss this season by a margin of more than one goal.
Bucknell got out to a dream start in this one after earning a penalty corner in its first foray into the Holy Cross circle. Lily Neilson had a shot saved off the line by Haley Davis, leading to a second corner, and this time the Bison cashed in with Melberger pocketing her first goal of the season just 55 seconds into the contest.
Less than two minutes later, Holy Cross goalie Brooke Ross made a save on a Kira Leclercq attempt, and Kaur was there to put home the rebound for her first tally of the season.
Holy Cross did not attempt its first shot of the day until the 26:45 mark, a Gabby Venezia attempt off a penalty corner that went wide. Bucknell nearly added a third in the final minute of the half when Melberger's drive off a penalty corner was blocked, and then Neilson rang one off the goal post.
Bucknell did tally that third goal with 4:16 left in the third quarter, with the freshman Puorro netting her second goal of the season just after Ross had made a save on Alina Arko.
The Bison added to their lead in the third despite mounting pressure from the Crusaders. Holy Cross earned six penalty quarters in the period but could not convert. They finally broke up the shutout on their eighth and final corner of the day with 4:16 to play. Meggan Fourie notched her second goal of the season off an assist from Ryleigh McComas.
Bucknell outshot Holy Cross 13-6, with Neilson leading the way with four shots. Nora Frederick made her first career start in goal and made one save while allowing just the one goal.
Bucknell will remain in New England to face Providence on Sunday at 1 p.m. The first-ever meeting between the Bison and Friars will stream on FloSports.
