PROVIDENCE, R.I. – It took all of regulation, two overtime periods and a shootout, but the Bucknell field hockey team eventually fell 2-1 to Providence on the road Sunday afternoon. Lily Neilson scored with 12:09 to play in regulation to tie the game and send it to the extra period. The Friars made four of their five attempts in the shootout, while Bucknell was only able to cash in on two, resulting in the loss.
Bucknell held a 21-15 lead in shots during the contest, with Neilson attempting 13 of them and putting nine on goal. Penalty corners were 6-5 in favor of the Friars. Bison goalkeeper Nora Frederick finished the game with six saves.
Neither team was able to find the back of the cage during a defense-heavy first half. The Bison limited the Friars to just three shots while attempting four themselves.
Providence made its way onto the board just over two minutes into the third quarter when Niamh Gowing shot from the top of the arc on the team's first penalty corner of the game and got it past the keeper for the 1-0 lead. Bucknell responded with four shots in the frame, but two went wide and two were saved by Providence goalkeeper Asia Porter, who tallied 12 saves throughout the contest.
Less than three minutes into the fourth quarter, the Bison were awarded back-to-back corners and made good on the second as Mackenzie Kile and Isabella Pavlides slid the ball to Neilson, and she scored from the top of the circle to tie the game at 1-1. It was the sophomore's eighth goal of the season, and Kile now has six assists this fall.
Bucknell added four more shots in the fourth but was unable to produce the go-ahead score.
The Bison continued to attack over the two overtime frames, firing off seven shots to Providence's five, but the tie remained.
Mia Field and Hannah Guarente were both successful on their shootout strokes, but the Friars turned away attempts by Neilson and Reanne Burgess.
Bucknell is back at Graham Field next weekend for a Patriot League game against Lafayette on Friday, Sept. 23. The Bison then host Drexel on Sunday, Sept. 25.
