PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – Blake Wisdom made five birdies and an eagle on the way to a 3-under-par 67 in the opening round of the Cornell/Temple Invitational on Saturday at the 1912 Club. Wisdom is just one shot off the lead at the halfway point of the 36-hole tournament, and Bucknell sits in a tie for fifth place in the team standings after posting a 287 total.
Wisdom shook off a bogey on the opening hole with birdies at 3, 4, 7, and 9 to make the turn in 32. He added another birdie at the par-4 10th, and after a bogey at 11 he eagled the par-5 12th to get to 5-under on his round. Wisdom gave a couple of shots back on 16 and 18, but his 67 puts him right in the mix on Sunday.
Rhode Island's Brandon Gillis and Temple's Ethan Whitney both carded 4-under 66s to share the lead. Wisdom is alone in third place, with three players at 2-under and another at 1-under.
Not far behind Wisdom was freshman Andres Barraza, who enjoyed a successful collegiate debut with a round of 71. Barraza made three birdies and 13 pars, with his only two blemishes a pair of double-bogeys at 2 and 14. Barraza is tied for 15th place in a field of 84 players.
Bucknell also counted a 74 from Jackson Bussell and a 75 from freshman James Key. Josh Holtschlag's 77 was discarded.
Michael Rudnick had a good day playing unattached, as he fired a 3-over 73 with three birdies.
Wisdom's 67 was two shots off the school record of 65, set by Ben Pellicani in 2005 and Chris Tanabe in 2019. Wisdom's career best is a 66 at the 2020 UNCG Martin Downs Collegiate.
Rhode Island compiled a 6-under 274 team total to grab a five-shot lead over second-place Temple. Penn is in third at 284, followed by Columbia at 286, and Bucknell and Cornell at 287.
Bucknell will be paired with Cornell and Columbia for Sunday's final round, with tee times ranging from 9:54-10:26 a.m.
