Bucknell Men's Water Polo Defeats Johns Hopkins, Falls to Fordham on Saturday

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell University men's water polo team defeated Johns Hopkins 15-7 on Saturday afternoon to open conference play before falling to Fordham 10-7 in the nightcap.
Game One: Bucknell 15, Johns Hopkins 7
The Bison started the game brightly, taking a 4-1 lead through the first frame. Hasan Mogultay opened the scoring at the 7:07 mark of the first, before the Blue Jays responded with a goal of their own just 20 seconds later. However, the Bison took command over the rest of the period, scoring three unanswered goals the rest of the way courtesy of Andu Vlasceanu, Aleksa Stefanovic, and Jack Lewis. Lewis made his season debut in the game on Saturday.
Johns Hopkins cut its deficit to 5-3 at the 3:18 mark in the second quarter, but the Bison responded once more, scoring four of the next five goals, including back-to-back goals from Vlasceanu, to take a 9-4 lead at the 6:04 mark of the third. Stefanovic added one more goal to close the third, before three straight goals to open the fourth helped Bucknell take a comfortable 15-7 win.
Eight Bison registered goals in the victory, with Vlasceanu leading the way for Bucknell with five goals in the win. Stefanovic managed multiple goals for the eighth straight game to start his career in the Orange and Blue with a three-goal haul on Saturday.
Game Two: Fordham 10, Bucknell 7
The Rams used a 3-1 run to close the fourth in taking down the Bison in the second game of the evening in a battle of the last two MAWPC champions.
However, it was Bucknell who struck first, jumping out to a 3-0 lead to gain some momentum in the first four minutes of the game. Shay Gillearn, Vlasceanu, and Stefanovic each found the back of the cage in the opening minutes.
Fordham struck right back with three goals of its own in the second half of the first period however, tying the game at three through one quarter.
The two teams would remain close at the halftime intermission, with a goal from Jack Lewis with 33 seconds to go in the half breaking a 4-4 tie as Bucknell took a one-goal lead, 5-4, at the halftime break.
The two teams were tied to start the fourth, until Fordham found three straight goals to open the period and take a 9-6 lead. Bucknell pulled within two with 2:46 to go on a goal by Vlasceanu, his seventh in two games on Saturday, but the Rams found a response 30 seconds later in blanking Bucknell the rest of the way in a 10-7 win.
Vlasceanu had two goals in the defeat, along with another three-goal game from Stefanovic. Lewis and Gillearn accounted for Bucknell's other tallies.
The Bison will return to Kinney for two more games on Sunday, beginning with an 8 a.m. contest against McKendree.
