LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's soccer team's 2022 Patriot League opener did not go as planned, as host Navy scored twice in each half to defeat the Bison 4-0 on Friday night at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
In a matchup of the teams picked to finish 1-2 in the Patriot League preseason poll, the Mids dodged an early bullet, then answered with an early goal of their own. The match was barely a minute old when Teresa Deda played Rylee Donaldson into the right side of the area, and Donaldson pulled a hard shot past the goalkeeper but squarely off the left post.
Five minutes later, Navy had the lead. Chloe Dawson served a ball from the right wing, and Alexa Riddle was able to bring it down and slip a shot inside the right post. Riddle, the 2021 Patriot League Rookie of the Year after leading the league in points, scored her first goal of the season.
In the 28th minute, Bison keeper Jenna Hall made a diving save on Amanda Graziano, but Jenna Daunt was first to the loose ball in the box and she poked it home for a 2-0 lead.
Hall kept the Mids from a third goal late in the half when she tipped one shot off the crossbar and then raced out to smother a follow-up attempt.
Bucknell came out of the locker room pressing for a goal to get back in the game, and just like in the first half Donaldson nearly scored a minute into the period. Holding off a defender along the left side of the area, Donaldson's left-footed shot to the near post required a diving save from Mattie Gallagher. Later in the half, Donaldson's cross from the end line was redirected just wide by Paige Temple.
The Bison spent plenty of time in the Navy box in the second half, but twice the Mids caught Bucknell on counters. In the 56th minute, Graziano sent a ball over the top to Caitlin Doran, who scored with a looping shot over Hall. Then in the 76th, Marlee Heaven got inside position in the six-yard box and redirected home a diagonal ball from Isabella Romano.
Both teams finished with 14 shots, with 10 of Bucknell's attempts coming in the second half. Donaldson led all players with six shots. Bucknell led 9-3 in corner kicks. Gallagher tallied six saves while Hall finished with three.
Navy avenged a pair of 2021 losses to Bucknell, including a 1-0 overtime defeat in Annapolis in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals.
The Bison are now four games deep into a five-game road swing. They will be back in the area again on Wednesday to face American at 4 p.m.
